Since 1999, Princeville Grade School’s art show has provided K-5th grade students with an opportunity to present their art for all of the community to see. Over the past few months, students have planned, designed, and created their artwork just in time for them to be put on display for the art show. The pieces will be put up on March 4th and will remain up until the 15th. However, their main show will be on display during the Turkey Noodle Dinner on March 7th.
This year, the art classes devoted a lot of their time to creating a theme for the show. Their inspiration stemmed from a new trend: pop up museums. The specific pop up museum they looked into was a selfie museum. This immediately stuck out to the class because selfies have become a major part of today’s culture, and they decided this would be a relevant theme to the students. As their research progressed, they came up with their final theme: “What makes you happy?”
Grade school art teacher Marianna Debolt stated: “I wanted to provide the students with a relevant theme -- a real life experience.”
The students would use this experience to take their already chosen art pieces to the next level. They then began formulating their ideas for their exhibits based off of the things that make them happy and started constructing their pieces. Photos of the student’s end results will be posted on the classes online art gallery, Artisonia.com.
At the end of the unit, the students will finish it off by writing their artist statements. This is an opportunity for them to reflect on their work along with proving their own personal opinion of the show, which will be important when deciding the theme for future shows. Documentation of their responses has been kept throughout the year, and will soon be turned into a video for the PGS YouTube channel, PGSART.
