WHAT ABOUT TOBACCO
Mapacho use is a time honored tradition in many indigenous traditions. It can be used in the form of smoke, powder and paste. Traditionally it is known as a connector. Connecting to yourself, to the energy of the Earth and to the energy of other Teacher plants. In this workshop we will engage with Mapacho through the powder (Hape) and through the paste (Ambil). WHATABOUT BRAINSPOTTING
BrainSpotting is a therapeutic approach discovered by Dr. David Grand in 2003 that works by identifying specific points in a person's visual field that correlate with stored issues or emotional experiences in the brain. The technique is based on the observation that "where you look affects how you feel." By maintaining eye position on these specific spots while processing emotional material, clients can access and process deep-rooted issues and emotions that may be otherwise difficult to reach through traditional talk therapy. There is a great deal of research to show that BrainSpotting is one of the most efficient and effective forms to address a host of issues.
The process involves a trained practitioner helping the client find relevant "brainspots" – fixed eye positions that connect to activated neural networks holding emotional and body-based memory of trauma (events where we had too much, too soon, too fast) or distress. Using focused mindful attention and bilateral sound stimulation, the client can process these experiences at a deep neurobiological level, often leading to profound healing and relief from symptoms.
BrainSpotting is particularly effective for treating motivation, anxiety, performance issues, and other psychological challenges because it directly accesses the subcortical brain and autonomic nervous system where flight, fight, freeze and fawn responses are stored. Dr. Price will be using a few different types of BrainSpotting specifically to help leaders. More about her work can be found on her website: www.pricelessbrainspotting.com
WHAT ABOUT FOCALIZING
Focalizing, developed by Dr. Michael Picucci, is a body-based therapeutic approach that helps people resolve stuck patterns by accessing the body's natural wisdom and healing capacity. Unlike traditional talk therapy, Focalizing emphasizes present-moment bodily awareness and the connection between physical sensations and emotional experiences. The practice guides individuals to shift their attention from thinking about problems to experiencing them through body awareness, allowing natural solutions to emerge from this deeper somatic intelligence.
The process typically involves getting comfortable, bringing attention to the body, and allowing oneself to "source" or connect with an inner knowing that exists beyond cognitive thought. It looks like noticing what is going on with your body as you think about the prompt. You then curiously follow sensations with a no-shame, no-blame, gentle, and playful approach. Through this nourishing, non-forcing approach, practitioners often experience what Picucci calls "shifts" – spontaneous releases or new insights that arise naturally when we step out of our habitual thought patterns and into body awareness.
Focalizing is particularly effective for addressing conditional thinking, relationship issues, and other challenges that may resist conventional therapeutic approaches because it bypasses the analytical mind to work directly with the body's inherent healing wisdom. Dr. Price will use Focalizing practices to help us access our innate bodily intelligence in connection with Mapacho so that we forge a new path forward as leaders. More information and research on Focalizing can be found at the Focalizing Institute.
