Ecological Health of the Gulf of California 

Dear Gulf of California researchers, 

We would appreciate your time in filling out the three-parted survey below (we estimate it will take about 15-30 min).

How would you assess the health status of the marine and coastal ecosystems of the Gulf of California? There are limited opportunities to see beyond single-region or single-species studies, which makes it difficult to be aware of, recognize, and act on threats and trends across the region.   

We are reaching out to fellow Gulf of California researchers who have long-term data sets in order to: 

     (1) Have a metadatabase of what data exists where;

     (2) Identify trends across a wide variety of taxonomic groups and studies;

     (3) Compile a status report that communicates general trends. 

Please complete this survey by June 24th.

The report was shared at a special session at the N-Gen Summit in Álamos (April 25-27, 2024, https://nextgensd.com/summit-2024/). This discussion resulted in a consensus on the importance of this effort and offered several important suggestions, which have been incorporated.

While a good start, there are many studies and a great deal of knowledge we are still lacking. WE NEED YOUR INFORMATION!

If you have not taken the survey, please do so now. If you have, please pass it along to others who should participate.

Some clarifications:

• Our effort in no way involves or intends to have direct interaction with your data at any point. We are simply interested in high level information on your studies and the trends you may be observing.

• The geographic area of this effort is the Gulf of California, including coastal Sinaloa and all the Gulf of California Islands. It also includes coastal terrestrial areas (ca. 5 km inland) along Baja California and Sonora. It does not include the Pacific coast of Baja California, terrestrial areas inland of the coastal margin, or areas south of Mazatlan.
