Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a medical procedure used to assess and diagnose disorders related to swallowing, also known as dysphagia. Dysphagia can occur for various reasons, such as neurological conditions, structural abnormalities, or other medical issues affecting the muscles and nerves involved in swallowing. FEES provides valuable information about the nature and severity of the swallowing disorder, which can help clinicians tailor appropriate treatment strategies.
The advantages of FEES include its ability to evaluate the swallowing process more naturally and dynamically than other tests, such as the Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS) or videofluoroscopy. FEES can be performed in several locations, making it a convenient option for patients unable to travel to radiology departments or those with mobility issues.
Is FEES a gold-standard assessment?
Videofluoroscopy (MBSS) has long been viewed as the “gold-standard” for evaluating a swallowing disorder for its comprehensive information. However, it is inefficient and not available in certain clinical and practical situations. FEES has been shown to be safe and effective for swallowing evaluation. Multiple research articles have also repeatedly proven that FEES is just as accurate with even better sensitivity and specificity than MBSS.
