So what is #safesigns?
#safesigns is an open source toolkit delivering a WhatsApp chatbot experience with the aim to support young women in navigating intimate relationships. The target user audience for #SafeSigns is young women aged 18 to 24-years-old and is designed as a safe, private space where girls can be comfortable learning about intimate relationships.
Using a gamified approach, #safesigns offers simple, symbolic rewards to guide and motivate users throughout their interactions. When asked a question, the user can indicate their chosen response using buttons where the interactive journey adapts depending on responses provided by the user.
How does the game work?
The goal of #safesigns is to become a RELATIONSHIP SUPERSTAR 👩🏾🎤. Guided through behaviourally-informed challenges, players earn 6 different outcome-orientated squad members to build 'the best squad a girl can have'.
#safesigns takes users through a series of different topics, offering critical reflection on power in relationships. Players learn how to recognise unhealthy relationship behaviours, identify trusted people, communicate in a healthy way, develop coping mechanisms, affirm their values to build self-efficacy, and how to plan for safety.
Regardless of whether the players answer a question correctly, #safesigns gives feedback on the response to ensure the user understands the topic at hand.
