Playing an instrument is like dancing, there are many different styles of it. The feeling you get from playing any instrument is like ranting to someone who’s actually listening to you. As I’ve picked up piano this year, I realize how difficult it can be in the beginning. However, once I started practicing more I found that the sound the piano makes is beautiful. Anyone can play any instrument and be good at it, all it takes is determination and practice.
Our musical community here at Roosevelt High School is very creative and fun. All of the students are here for each other, we can rely on each other's support. Music can do a lot, and that includes bringing people together. Here at Roosevelt that’s exactly what our music program does. It doesn't matter if you’re in choir, band, orchestra or even if you’re just sitting in one of the classes because you didn't get the elective you originally picked out. Your peers will always support you when you feel frustrated or when you need help, this includes things outside of music as well.
Different kinds of music can make you feel a variety of emotions. I’ve asked a few students in the music program how music makes them feel when they play, sing or listen to it.
“When I sing or play the ukulele It feels like you’re ranting, or like a wash of relief,” expressed Regan Palmer, a Junior at RHS. She described that music makes them feel relaxed or calm.
Other students share the same feeling about how music evokes a variety of emotions. “When I play or listen to music it suddenly makes me feel a burst of energy, it gets me motivated to do things.” Aissa, a Junior at RHS reflects on how it makes them feel fired up or energetic.
A few even mentioned that it helps them gain confidence in themselves. When you get your first tune or song down it helps boost your confidence, it makes you realize you are capable of making music. As children we believe we can do anything, and as we grow older we should continue those beliefs. Music is an art, and art is something anyone is capable of making so long as you believe you can.
