Welcome to Voices of Roosevelt! Voices is an independent, student-run school newspaper focused on giving students a voice in our Portland community. Based out of Roosevelt High School in Portland, Oregon, Voices empowers students by keeping them informed by sharing community stories, news, editorials, and current events. We started Voices in May of 2022 because we as RHS students wanted to have a place for young people like us to be able to access valid information about what is happening in our community. All content on voicesofroosevelt.com is original and created by the members of Voices and all credit must be accurately given to Voices of Roosevelt. For more information, reference our license. We welcome story ideas, contributions, and feedback! Please email us at voicesofrhs@gmail.com!
Our talented team of student journalists, editors, photographers, artists, and graphic designers are working to bring information and stories to our community directly from Roosevelt students. With every new article and piece of content we create, the Voices team strives to bring our RHS community closer together and make us more educated as a whole.
Orianna Reid is a 16 year old junior who transferred to Roosevelt at the beginning of the school year. She grew up in St Johns and has lived in the same neighborhood their entire life. She believes her biggest accomplishment is winning Bingo in her Freshman Spanish class and getting a sticker for her victory. She is strongly motivated toward success by her friends and family. Orianna’s favorite hobby is dancing and she dances with The Portland Ballet. If she could change one thing about the world, Orianna would end large scale industrial farming of animals because of its harsh effects on both the animals and the climate. Orianna’s first experience with school newspapers was in middle school and she really enjoyed the creative and expressive aspects of writing which led her to joining our Voices team.
17 year old Kennedy Hansen is a senior here at Roosevelt High School. They grew up half in the southwestern side of Idaho, but have wholeheartedly accepted the community of St. Johns as their own. Kennedy also happens to be slightly fluent in French. Currently, what's keeping them afloat for their last year here at the Velt is Yerba Mattes, their best friend Ellie, and the welcoming and accepting community of the RHS Publications Crew. In their three years here at Roosevelt, Kennedy's biggest accomplishment has been starring in their junior year’s “Senior Shorts”.
Kennedy’s absolute favorite thing about themselves is their self determination, which has helped them in many incredible ways during their high school career. In five years we hope to see them on the Broadway stage, and five more years from that, we hope to see them on an even higher level of Broadway.
Eleanor Black is a 17 year old Senior at Roosevelt and they run the Voice of Roosevelt Poetry Column. Eleanor is passionate about art, poetry, theatre, and their cats. They are such a lively and energetic part of our Voices Team!

They also are very into their ceramics classes and writing! In 5 years expect to see them graduating college and traveling through the country in a van. You can identify them by their chunky jewelry and matcha fraps. Welcome Zion to the Voices crew!
Besbris is one of our new members to the Voices Club and they are a Junior. They grew up in different parts of Oregon but have now settled in St. Johns. They love how silly our community is, and they love their cat. They are opinionated, pessimistic, funny, and entertaining. In five years we hope to see them graduating college and going into journalism or film. Their greatest accomplishment has been doing so many new things, and putting themselves out there. Something they are passionate about making better movies. They are an excellent writer and an even more excellent person. We are very excited to have them on the team!
