Back in the 50s Roosevelt had a very lively school newspaper that wasn't just active in school but also their community. They had a ton of editions including special ones for different holidays or events, like the Valentine's crossword of 1987 and the color-printed Christmas edition. They covered a variety of different topics from school dances to different school clubs and events. We were lucky enough to look through these old editions and see some cool things. One issue that specifically stood out to us was the November 1972 issue of the Rough Rider. This edition detailed how the first woman was chosen for the school's student body president. To see what was happening then versus now at the same school is amazing.
These old articles were so inspiring and you could tell how much work went into them. With whole pages about community events, Ads, plays, and musicals, and even a page of games. As a member of the current Roosevelt theatre program, reading about the shows that my community put on in the past was an intriguing experience! Shows like Oklahoma and more. As we continue the reboot of our school’s journalistic presence in a more modern way, being able to look back on our predecessor's work has been quite inspiring.
We encourage anyone wanting to have an opportunity to join this community and bring people together just like they did back then with their paper to join our redefined digital newspaper and forecast for a publications class when that date arrives.
