Our beloved librarian Ms. Tighe retired last year leaving a hole in our school's community. Our new librarian Ms. Graham is hoping to fill that hole. Our team had the chance to interview her on her hopes and setbacks with this tough job. This is her first time working at a high school library after her long time as Ockley Green Middle School’s librarian.
When teachers go into retirement, their jobs are posted for other teachers who have been in the district to see. Ms. Graham said that she jumped on the job because she “was excited to see a high school library job with a bunch of kids she already knew”. The Library is a large space that Ms. Tighe set it up to her liking, so now Ms. Graham has plenty of space to make her own. She says it's “interesting to get to know what choices the previous librarian made and what choices she could make to make the space her own. "
She is still in the process of figuring that out. She says that she's “used to walking around with students and giving book recommendations because she knows them, but with a school this size and with the number of students that I don't know it's hard to decide on what books she needs, and how to make the space not only mine but a good space for students.” She says that providing the right supplies for students and making the Library her own are her two biggest struggles coming into a new space.
Her favorite part is seeing all of her old students grow into themselves and become more confident. She is excited to eventually make the library her own and she can't wait to connect and make bonds with the students and staff and make the library a safe welcoming space. We hope to make this school year the best for Ms. Graham and hopefully, students will appreciate the library just a little more.
