Freshman year is a pivotal time for teenagers everywhere. Whether you're starting at a new school or moving up a grade with the kids you have grown up with, it is always good to find ways to immerse yourself in your school and community. As an incoming sophomore this year, I understand the struggle of finding your way especially in a new climate with new people. Here are some tips and tricks to make your year bearable.
Join a club
Roosevelt has a variety of clubs available to students targeted towards many different interests. Some of which include a Drama Club, QSA and our very own Voices of Roosevelt. These clubs are a great resource to meet people with common interests and occupy your time during lunch.
Try a sport
Athletes make up a large part of Roosevelt's student body. Fall, winter and spring sports are a great outlet for students to meet new people while getting exercise and working in a team setting. Some of next season's sports include Swim, Wrestling and Basketball. I have met some of my closest friends through sports at Roosevelt and you can too. If you've never played a sport before that you are interested in, don't be afraid to try it out!
Stay organized
Something significant I learned my first year of high school is the importance of organization. Something as small as having a planner or reserving an hour a day for homework can go a long way. Classwork can be overwhelming after shifting from a middle school to high school setting and the best way to stay on top of it is keeping track of what you're being assigned and when you plan to do it.
Be friendly
For many, meeting new people can be difficult but something as small as a smile can go a long
way. A great way to make a good first impression is to compliment someone's outfit or
accessory, offer them a spare pencil or piece of gum and help them to find a classroom.
Make plans
Lastly, making plans with new people such as sitting together at lunch or hanging out over the weekend is a perfect way to get to know someone better. Social media can also be a great way
to connect with your peers. Getting people's phone numbers and snapchats is a good
opportunity to stay in contact with new friends and get to know each other better.
In total, being yourself and putting yourself out there is a crucial part of starting your four years
in high school. These are a few great ways to start your year off on a good note and create a
foundation to be successful at RHS.
