The common areas in Roosevelt High School are for us students to have a space to go to when we want to work or when we have a free period. If that’s what they are for then why aren’t we allowed to do just that with said spaces? I couldn’t answer that for you even if I wanted to, but we can ask a few of our teachers. We will discuss the “dedicated” spaces to us students and the lack of being allowed to use those spaces. I'll explain where students go if not the common areas and why as well as having a few students explain that themselves.
Common areas or the “coms” as some of us know them. Do we know why those areas are a thing? Apparently the common areas were made for us students, those areas are “dedicated” to us. Yet I always see students being told to leave those areas during flex or when they have permission to be in those areas “dedicated” to us. We are told to go to the library or back to class, but what happens when too many of us are in the library? We get loud or it gets crowded, if those areas are for us to use when we have permission during class and we are trying to study during flex then why can’t we do just that.
Let’s discuss how students hangout around the neighborhood in the stairwells, bathrooms even. Why do you think some do that? I have my theory. My theory is that since we aren’t allowed to use the common areas that are “dedicated” to us students, they hangout outside of school or in the stairwells and the bathroom. I asked another one of our peers how they feel knowing that some of their peers and or friends are hanging out in the neighborhood, bathrooms and or stairwells. One of our peers said “If I’m being honest I don’t feel angry or upset about it, I’m more worried that something could happen to them seeing as this isn’t the safest neighborhood.” If students are worried about this you can imagine how serious the issue truly is.
Teachers tell us the common areas are dedicated to us students, meaning that those areas are there for us to use. If those areas are there for us to use then why is it that I see and hear student’s being shooed out of those area’s and told we can’t be there for free period time or flex time. Let’s hear what our fellow peers think about the common areas and how we use them or lack thereof. Student A said “When you’re trying to do your work in those areas with permission to be there and they tell me to go to the library I get aggravated and annoyed.” Student B mentioned that “the library and the classrooms are too quiet or too loud and working in those environments is uncomfortable.” Plenty of other students said some things along those lines, they feel at peace and like they can focus in the common areas.
Generally speaking, if the common areas are for us students to use, we should be able to use them without the worry of being told to go somewhere else. Threatening us by saying our parents will be called isn’t helping us, in fact it's making us angry and annoyed. Those feelings are what leads to students/ teens to rebel and have the lacking respect for the staff.
