I am able to meet individually with students for brief, solution-focused support to help with concerns such as peer conflict, family changes, grief/loss, emotional regulation, organization, and problem-solving. As a school counselor, I do not provide therapy but I partner with families to connect students with outside providers when ongoing mental-health support is needed. Please reach out to me directly about this.
The mission of Duniway’s School Counseling program is to foster a school community based on solid foundation of diversity, social justice, and equity. Our program delivers individualized, developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant interventions and activities that promote academic achievement, social-emotional growth, as well as career and college readiness.
Through partnership with students’ families and other educators and stakeholders, our program advocates for equity, access, and success for all students by identifying and addressing barriers and empowering students to recognize their strengths and achieve their goals.
What does a school counselor do?
Lunch Bunches -Small lunch groups are offered as a way for students to build connections, make friends, and practice social skills in a relaxed and fun setting.
Small Groups- I've offered Worry Wizards, Body Calm, Friendly Dragons, Executive Functioning Skills, Create More, Fear Less and more for select students. Referalls for small groups are made by parents, teachers, and myself.
1st–5th Grade New Student Social Events -All new students in grades 1–5 are invited to three special social events throughout the year, including Lemonade in the Peace Garden and Cocoa & Cookies. These gatherings give students a chance to meet one another, build friendships, and feel welcomed into the Duniway community. Our goal is to make sure every new student knows they belong here.
5th Grade to Middle School Transition-In the spring, I teach transition lessons where students learn about middle school, practice using combination locks, and talk through questions and worries about the change ahead. I also share important information with families about the middle school lottery, key dates, and timelines.
504 Case Manager- I manage all 504 eligibility meetings and provide ongoing case management to support students with accommodations. I collaborate closely with families, teachers, and staff to develop, implement, and review 504 plans so students have equitable access to learning and support at school.
