Dear First Grade Families,
I am excited to be your child's first grade teacher! This is my 12th year teaching first grade at Capitol Hill and I can't wait to get started on our year of learning fun in Room 107. This year we'll dive into reading, writing, math, science, health, and more. We'll build a supportive classroom community where all students are valued. We'll go on field trips, play games, and read so many books together. We'll go to PE, Music, Art, and Library. We will have a wonderful year of learning!
I am so excited we will have Ms. Ritter, a student teacher from University of Portland this year. Please visit the "Meet the Teachers" page of this website to learn a little about us.
I am looking forward to connecting with your family. Communication is key as we start the new school year together. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions and concerns. Let's make it a great year in first grade!
Sincerely,
Allyson Casey (she/her)

What does my child need on the first day of school, TUESDAY AUGUST 26?
a completed after school plan (and bus tag, if applicable),
a full water bottle labeled with their name
1-2 small snacks for AM / PM PLEASE NOTE: we have students with severe food allergies (peanuts / eggs) so please avoid those ingredients.
a lunch (or plans to buy school lunch)
a backpack
What time does the school day start and end?
The school day is 8:00 - 2:30. The front doors open at 7:53, so please plan to arrive between then and 8:00. **Students needing breakfast should arrive to cafeteria doors (by parking lot) by 7:45. It is important that students are not missing classtime each day.
Where do I pick up my child at the end of the school day?
We will meet you at our classroom door that opens to the outside - near the flagpole to the left of the school's front doors. It is clearly labeled with my last name.
Bus riders and Champions walk to their appropriate locations.
How many students are in the class?
24 so far....
How can I help? When can I volunteer?
Give us a few weeks to settle into our classroom routines and build our community, and then I'll reach out about volunteering in the classroom. Fill out a PPS Volunteer application and pass the PPS Volunteer Background Check here. This year volunteers are required to attend a training session with the Principal.
Volunteer Training on Friday, September 11, from 8:30–9:00 a.m. in the library. It will cover working with students, supporting positive behavior, confidentiality, school routines, and what to do when a student needs help or there’s an emergency.
I will likely have some take-home projects for any grown up that would like to help! Feel free to reach out if interested. Thank you!
Website: This website will serve as a home base for all things First Grade. We will post monthly newsletter here and add photos.

Please know that I respond to messages/emails from 7:45 - 3:45. I may not respond to messages received outside school hours.
Change to After School Plan: If there is a change in your child's after school plans, please let me know in writing via ParentSquare and CC the office staff.
In Person or Virtual Meeting: I am happy to set up a time to talk on the phone, do a video chat, or meet in person. I appreciate 24 hours advance notice. Please reach out if you'd like to set up a meeting.
