Coupling of core GEM and edge XGC simulations

Coupling of core GEM and edge XGC simulations

The movie shows the time evolution of the density perturbation for a GEM-XGC coupled simulation of electrostatic collisionless Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) turbulence. A DIIII-D-like equilibrium is used assuming an adiabatic electron response. Neoclassical terms are included as well.

As Particle-In-Cell (PIC) codes, GEM and XGC both use 1000 particle per cell in this simulation. GEM simulates the core region, while XGC simulates the edge. Dashed lines indicate the overlap region where the charge density provided by both codes is composed prior to solve the Poisson equation. Turbulence rapidly develops in the edge region, where driving gradients are largest, and then propagates towards the core.
