Read Alouds
Read alouds are a great way to get your child engaged and thinking about stories before, during, and after they are read. Each week your child will be assigned suggested read aloud videos. Please feel free to supplement, or replace, those with any read aloud stories of your own. Below are some examples of things you might discuss with your child:
Tips for Reading Together
Before reading
Make a prediction: What might this story be about?
Print concepts: point to the title, author, illustrator (what are their jobs?)
Have you read any other stories by this author?
Ask questions: using pictures and the title, ask "what are you wondering about this book?"
During
Characters: actions, feelings, thoughts, how they change
Making predictions about what will happen next
Check on predictions as you read
Make inferences: what else is the author telling you
Make connections: text to self, text to text and text to world
Ask each other questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how
After
What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?
How did the character change from the beginning to the end of the story?
Retell the story in sequence-retell rope
What was your favorite part of the story?
Did this story leave you wondering anything?
Did you learn anything from reading this story?
Was this book written to tell a story or to teach you something?
