Students will be tasked with opening their Power School to check grades and any missing assignments, and then setting up a plan for the week and beyond. All this will happen with the guidance of their ACCT teacher, but we are attempting to build more student ownership in their learning.
Students will then answer three questions:
What teachers do I need to meet with this week and for what?
One goal I have for the next week is…
I will know I am successful if…
Academic check-ins will be done in (PINK) paper form and sent home with the student. Hopefully this can serve as a guide in conversation for you, as well.

Upcoming Listening Sessions on Proficiency Cut Score Implementation
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is hosting a few more listening sessions prior to the November Board meeting to gather input on cut score implementation. Below are email invitations for parents and educators to attend.
Information for parent listening sessions
On September 25, 2025, the Virginia Board of Education unanimously approved revisions to cut scores for mathematics and reading Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. Cut scores define the minimum score a student must achieve to reach a performance level on an assessment. By modifying cut scores, the Board ensures that "proficient" reflects the skills and knowledge students need to be ready for success in college, career, or in military pathways. The Virginia Department of Education is currently gathering feedback on the implementation of revised cut scores. We value input from parents to inform implementation decisions.
We are inviting parents to participate in an upcoming listening session. Listening sessions provide the opportunity for parents to receive an overview of the proposed implementation models, share their feedback on the models, and identify supports and resources needed by parents to help their child meet higher expectations. Listed below are days, times, and login information for virtual listening. You can also share your input using the feedback form. To learn more about new cut scores and upcoming stakeholder listening sessions, please visit Raising Expectations in Virginia K-12 Education.

Quick Reminders
Shout out to our fabulous PTO for putting on two dances on Friday night! We had almost 500 students come out for a fun night of fall, flannel, and friends!
Friday, October 17 and Monday, October 20 are student holidays.
The first quarter grading period ends on Thursday, October 16.
Additionally, while students are permitted to carry a water bottle, we ask that only water be consumed in classrooms.
For parents that drive to/from school, please continue to use the designated route by entering the line from the west. Please do not pull a U-turn on Old Buckingham Road or cut the line via Red Barn. Let's be respectful of each other by waiting patiently in line. We are more and more efficient this year and the finishes before the tardy bell rings.
This week, students will take common assessments in all English and Math classrooms, as well as other Science and Social Studies classes based on grade levels. Common assessments are cumulative assessments taken in all classes that allow teachers to identify learning trends, improve or alter teaching strategies, and ensure alignment within the taught curriculum. As always, we simply ask our students to give their best effort!
Academic Check-Ins
Part of middle school is teaching self-efficacy and showing students how to take responsibility for their learning. If we can reach this goal school-wide, students will thrive in high school!
Academic check-ins will be done in (PINK) paper form and sent home with the student. Hopefully this can serve as a guide in conversation for you, as well.
Our final Academic Check-In for the first quarter is Monday, October 13 - be sure to ask your student for their check-in paper when they get home. The first quarter grades end on Thursday, October 16.

This school year, our students will be working on an “Academic Check-In” during ACCT every other week.
Our second Academic Check-In is Monday, September 29 - be sure to ask your student for their check-in paper when they get home.

Collecting Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charity
Save your tabs from cans! Led by a former staff member here at the middle school, the Powhatan Community collected about 600 pounds of tabs last year. We are going for even more this year! All schools are taking part and proceeds will support the Ronald McDonald Charity.
Silence Hurts
We work best as ONE TEAM in Powhatan. When problems or situations arise, solving them together is key.
Students are able to use our "Silence Hurts" form to report behavior of any kind. This form goes directly to all administrators and counselors, and students can use this form anonymously. Students are encouraged to use this form to help a friend in need or report a situation. The form is located on our PCPS websites. We encourage our students to be an upstander and help a friend in need - "if you see something, say something!"

This year, our school will begin using Securly Pass, a digital hall-pass system that replaces paper passes and helps us better manage student movement during the school day. With Securly Pass, students request passes on their school-issued devices, and teachers approve them quickly. Staff can see active passes in real time, helping us improve safety, reduce classroom disruptions, and keep accurate records—without tracking student locations. This system is used only during the school day to make our hall-pass process faster, safer, and more organized.

All students should have received a "Dream On" Powhatan Middle t-shirt this week. If your student did not receive one, or if you need to exchange sizes, please reach out to your student's HPE teacher.
Rights & Responsibilities, Chromebook Agreement, Student Profile, and Student Health forms should be completed and turned in to your student's 1st block teacher by August 28th
Powhatan Middle School Summer Reading 2025
Summer Reading Activities are due to your child's middle school English teacher by Thursday, August 28th. Students will be treated to an ice cream sundae on September 10th for completing their Summer Reading Activities. There's still time to complete the activities!
Cell Phone Free Learning Environment
As you know, the Powhatan School Board wants the schools to provide students with an optimal learning environment. As such, policy JFCM was established last year. This policy was updated this year and states two important points:
“From bell to bell, [middle school] students are restricted from using personal electronic devices, including but not limited to, cell phones, smartwatches, laptops, Bluetooth devices, cameras, electronic games, and E-Readers. Devices must be powered off and away (i.e., gym locker, bookbag, purse, out of sight).”
"Smart device" means any personal electronic device that can connect to the internet and wirelessly collect, process, and transmit data, including smartwatches and tablets.
The goal is to reduce distractions and promote a healthier, more engaging school experience for our students. If you need to contact your middle schooler, or if they need to contact you, we ask that you call the main office at (804) 362-2500.

Upcoming Safety Drill: Lockdown Messaging
In accordance with Virginia Code §22.1-137.2, Powhatan Middle School will be conducting a lockdown drill this week, as part of the mandatory safety drills for the 2025-26 school year. Our teachers will be talking with the students regarding the purpose and procedures of this drill. During the drill, you will receive a practice lockdown message via SchoolMessenger (email and text). This is how a message would appear if this were an actual lockdown event. The purpose of this messaging is for parents and guardians to be familiar with community expectations during an actual event. Another communication will be sent via SchoolMessenger (email and text) to announce the conclusion of the drill.
Health and PE Rotations:
These teachers will be in Health this week: Woodson, Bates, Fields.
These teachers will be in PE this week: Allanson, Henderson, Lazaro, Miles
Our theme for the 2025-2026 school year is "Dream On." Last year, we were "One Team, One Dream," and this year our focus is to challenge and inspire students to turn their dreams into reality!
We are also fans of the Aerosmith song! After researching their lyrics, we are even more inspired to find that "Dream On" is a motivational anthem that encourages listeners (students) to pursue their ambitions with passion, resilience, and a sense of urgency. That is our focus this year, igniting passion to turn dreams on.
Students will also get a t-shirt during the first week of school with this design.

If you made it to Open House, you may have noticed a new “Literacy Leaders” display in the front entryway. We are excited to be kicking off a literacy campaign designed to get students excited about reading and writing! Each month we will offer schoolwide reading challenges for both students and teachers. Grade levels will compete to see who can score the most points for participating. At the end of the year, the grade level with the most points will be crowned the Literacy Leaders! We hope you will encourage your student to find a book they can enjoy. Maybe you would even like to read along with them! We all know that reading and writing are fundamental life skills that can lead to a more successful future. Our goal is to help our students build their literacy competency by recognizing the value of reading and maybe even learning to love it along the way!

Student Learning
As we launch into a new school, we wanted to make sure that our community is aware of the courses that require end of course state SOL assessments. As we transition from year to year, different grade levels require different state assessments.
The following classes have a state SOL assessment:
Math 6, Math 7, Math 8, Integrated Math 1, Integrated Math 2, Algebra
English 6, English 7, English 8
Integrated Science 2, Physical Science 8, Earth Science
Integrated History 2, Civics & Economics, World History 1
All of our SOL tests are still in the Spring, typically in May. As you are reviewing your child’s schedule, please make sure you are aware of these upcoming assessments.
Furthermore, promotion from grade-to-grade looks different as students progress from elementary to middle school. Please make sure to review the PCPS Promotion and Retention Policy IKEC for more information.

Securly Pass
This year, our school will begin using Securly Pass, a digital hall-pass system that replaces paper passes and helps us better manage student movement during the school day. With Securly Pass, students request passes on their school-issued devices, and teachers approve them quickly. Staff can see active passes in real time, helping us improve safety, reduce classroom disruptions, and keep accurate records—without tracking student locations. This system is used only during the school day to make our hall-pass process faster, safer, and more organized.
