Academic Check-Ins
Part of middle school is teaching self-efficacy and showing students how to take responsibility for their learning. If we can reach this goal school-wide, students will thrive in high school!
This school year, our students will be working on an “Academic Check-In” during ACCT every other week. Students will be tasked with opening their Power School to check grades and any missing assignments, and then setting up a plan for the week and beyond. All this will happen with the guidance of their ACCT teacher, but we are attempting to build more student ownership in their learning.
Students will then answer three questions:
What teachers do I need to meet with this week and for what?
One goal I have for the next week is…
I will know I am successful if…
Academic check-ins will be done in (PINK) paper form and sent home with the student. Hopefully this can serve as a guide in conversation for you, as well.
Our next Academic Check-In is Monday, November 24 - be sure to ask your student for their check-in paper when they get home.

Our next Academic Check-In is Monday, November 10 - be sure to ask your student for their check-in paper when they get home.

Upcoming Listening Sessions on Proficiency Cut Score Implementation
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is hosting a few more listening sessions prior to the November Board meeting to gather input on cut score implementation. Below are email invitations for parents and educators to attend.
Information for parent listening sessions
On September 25, 2025, the Virginia Board of Education unanimously approved revisions to cut scores for mathematics and reading Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. Cut scores define the minimum score a student must achieve to reach a performance level on an assessment. By modifying cut scores, the Board ensures that "proficient" reflects the skills and knowledge students need to be ready for success in college, career, or in military pathways. The Virginia Department of Education is currently gathering feedback on the implementation of revised cut scores. We value input from parents to inform implementation decisions.
We are inviting parents to participate in an upcoming listening session. Listening sessions provide the opportunity for parents to receive an overview of the proposed implementation models, share their feedback on the models, and identify supports and resources needed by parents to help their child meet higher expectations. Listed below are days, times, and login information for virtual listening. You can also share your input using the feedback form. To learn more about new cut scores and upcoming stakeholder listening sessions, please visit Raising Expectations in Virginia K-12 Education.

Strategic Plan Steering Committee
Powhatan County Public Schools is reviewing and updating our strategic plan, Charting the Path to 2030, to ensure it continues to reflect our community’s values, recent state changes, and the progress we’ve made together.
We’re forming a Strategic Plan Steering Committee made up of students, families, staff, school board members, and community members from across the county. The committee will help review data, goals, and key progress indicators to keep us on the right path.
If you’re interested in serving, please complete the application form by November 10, 2025. We ask applicants to be willing to commit to all four steering committee meetings: December 8 and January 16 (from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and February 17 and July 28 (from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon). To apply, fill out the application form. Thank you for helping guide the future of PCPS.
PCPS Required Notifications
Each year, Powhatan County Public Schools is required to share certain notifications with families based on federal and state legislation. PCPS sent out the initial list of required notifications on Aug. 20, 2025. Based on Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) and legislative updates that have since been released, PCPS has updated its notifications. Here is a link to a summary of those items: Required Notifications 2025-2026.

Quick Reminders
Shout out to our fabulous PTO for putting on two dances on Friday night! We had almost 500 students come out for a fun night of fall, flannel, and friends!
Friday, October 17 and Monday, October 20 are student holidays.
The first quarter grading period ends on Thursday, October 16.
Additionally, while students are permitted to carry a water bottle, we ask that only water be consumed in classrooms.
For parents that drive to/from school, please continue to use the designated route by entering the line from the west. Please do not pull a U-turn on Old Buckingham Road or cut the line via Red Barn. Let's be respectful of each other by waiting patiently in line. We are more and more efficient this year and the finishes before the tardy bell rings.
This week, students will take common assessments in all English and Math classrooms, as well as other Science and Social Studies classes based on grade levels. Common assessments are cumulative assessments taken in all classes that allow teachers to identify learning trends, improve or alter teaching strategies, and ensure alignment within the taught curriculum. As always, we simply ask our students to give their best effort!

Attention 7th grade parents, Student Health Services will be screening your student for vision and hearing needs on September 23rd and 24th. Please have your student wear/bring their glasses if applicable. You will be notified if further evaluation is recommended. Please reach out to our clinic staff if you have any questions.
Our first Academic Check-In is Monday, September 15 - be sure to ask your student for their check-in paper when they get home.
Girls’ Soccer Update
Last Spring, the Powhatan County School Board approved the first-ever Powhatan Middle School Girls’ Soccer Team! The girls will play in the Spring, and we are underway developing a schedule of teams to play.
We are in need of a Girls’ Soccer Head Coach - please pass this application along to anyone interested and reach out to our Athletic Director, Bill Wasosky, for any questions.
Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program
The Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program has been in place in Powhatan County Public Schools for over 10 years. The goal of the program is to help foster strong relationships among our students and the positive adult role models in the community. Whether at any of our 3 elementary schools or our middle school, you would meet with a student once a week and ultimately act as another advocate for them. It can be anything from academic support to conversation, playing games, making crafts, and so much more. The program is planned to begin the first week of October and will last until mid-May, when SOL testing begins in our upper grade levels.
If you are interested in participating as a mentor for the Lunch Buddies Program, we would be happy to have you! Please reach out to lunchbuddies@powhatan.k12.va.us for any questions. If you are interested in applying, please use the QR code on the flyer to start the process or visit this page to apply. Feel free to share the flyer with others. We appreciate your support with our schools.

Powhatan Middle Back to School Night

We ask for your patience and consideration of the following options: save gas and carpool with a friend or neighbor; park in the bus loop; use the parking lots in front of PMS; or use Powhatan Elementary’s parking lot.
Book Fair
We are excited to bring back a book fair to Powhatan Middle School! As we know, literacy is extremely important in all contents and our teachers are excited to bring the joy back to reading! Securly Pass
This year, our school will begin using Securly Pass, a digital hall-pass system that replaces paper passes and helps us better manage student movement during the school day. With Securly Pass, students request passes on their school-issued devices, and teachers approve them quickly. Staff can see active passes in real time, helping us improve safety, reduce classroom disruptions, and keep accurate records—without tracking student locations. This system is used only during the school day to make our hall-pass process faster, safer, and more organized.

Upcoming Safety Drill: Lockdown Messaging
In accordance with Virginia Code §22.1-137.2, Powhatan Middle School will be conducting a lockdown drill this week, as part of the mandatory safety drills for the 2025-26 school year. Our teachers will be talking with the students regarding the purpose and procedures of this drill. During the drill, you will receive a practice lockdown message via SchoolMessenger (email and text). This is how a message would appear if this were an actual lockdown event. The purpose of this messaging is for parents and guardians to be familiar with community expectations during an actual event. Another communication will be sent via SchoolMessenger (email and text) to announce the conclusion of the drill.
