Reopening Update - Students return to campus four days a week beginning on April 5, 2021
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) have changed their recommendations for physical distancing in the classroom from six feet to three feet, no longer requiring six feet between students’ desks as long as students continue to wear masks. This change will allow Poway High School to bring more students back onto campus for in-person instruction.
Beginning Monday, April 5, students who currently come to campus for instruction can return to campus four days a week: all alphas/last names from Monday through Thursday. Fridays will remain asynchronous. We will continue to follow the current bell schedule (7:30 a.m. - 1:45 p.m.). Students who are virtual and want to return to campus can be considered on a case-by-case basis as we still need to monitor class sizes and adhere to three-feet distancing requirements. Please fill out this form to request a change in your learning setting.
Health and Safety Agreement: A signed Health and Safety Agreement is required for all students who attend school on campus, as well as students who participate in sports and activities on campus. Please print and sign the Health and Safety Agreement and have your student turn it into their third-period teacher or to the PHS front office if they have not already done so.
Bus Service: The district school buses will pick up students after school at 2:30 p.m. MTS buses have also resumed service.
Teachers' office hours are from 1:45 - 2:30 p.m.
All donations made to this account will be strictly for reopening purposes.
The district is currently working with the Labor unions to determine who may be excused from work due to disability. There are technical aspects with employees to ensure we meet the letter of the law.
The teacher who tests positive will be quarantined at home and their students would be supervised in the instructional space in the same manner as students who have teachers that must remain virtual. The class is notified as soon as possible any time that a case is present in a space that they are in.
There are two scenarios depending on the teacher:
In-person teacher:
Students who are in the space with the teacher would not likely be on zoom. The teacher will work with both online and in-person students simultaneously.
Virtual teacher:
Students who are in the space with the substitute would likely be on zoom. The teacher will work with both online and in-person students simultaneously. The substitute will assist students in the space.
As of right now, all on-campus activities of traditional nature will not take place. This is subject to change only by a change in the county orders.
The district announced January 19 as the date for students to return to campus at the November 12 Board of Education meeting. Our official Reopening was delayed until March.
Students and staff are required to wear a mask at all times except during lunch while eating.
Athletics are still undecided at this time.
While there isn't a uniform maximum for classes when we return, the goal for most traditional classrooms would be 20 students. The exceptions to this would be classes such as PE, Performing Arts or any other class that would take place in a larger space than our traditional classroom.
Yes. We are confident that the concurrent model will provide an equal level of quality instruction as Virtual Learning, if not better, once teachers have the opportunity to work in that environment.
It is our belief that it is in the best interest of everyone to allow students and staff, whenever possible, to remain in an environment in which they are comfortable. With that being said, PHS does not control the choices that teachers are given, nor do we have the ability to hire extra teachers without guidance from the District Office.
This option is not financially feasible, nor does our master schedule line up in such a way that most teachers who teach the same subject are doing so in the same class period.
Yes. Our goal is to always be transparent with our staff and community. We will follow all protocols set out by our district in regards to positive covid cases on our campus.
We will enforce new face mask and social distancing requirements similar to any other school rule. We will provide guidance to our students to help them follow these new rules and work with those who do not comply.
We are looking into the feasibility of outdoor classrooms. No decision has been made at this time.
At this time, no plexiglass is being provided. With proper spacing of desks we will be able to follow the CDC guidelines for classroom instruction.
Students will follow a normal class schedule.
Our early projections approximate that roughly 800 students will be allowed on campus each day. The maximum class size for most courses will be approximately 20 students.
We follow all of the PUSD recommendations as laid out in the PUSD Reopening plan.
We will follow the PUSD reopening guidelines in regard to student/teacher sicknesses, in addition to the guidelines set out by the CDC.
Yes. All bathrooms and classrooms will be cleaned on a regular basis.
Yes. Students who feel more comfortable in the virtual environment will be given that opportunity.
At this time, we are developing plans that include students making a decision to remain fully Virtual or fully In-Person.
No. The reasons this doesn't work fall under the Re-Organization option talked about in our presentation.
Yes.
Yes. If a student is in immediate contact with someone who has tested positive for covid-19, we ask that they quarantine for 14 days. While quarantining, students can access their classes virtually. No OCIS contract is required.
No. The high school master schedule does not allow for us to split up students based upon grade.
No. The way high school schedules work, bringing back only one grade level is not feasible.
We certainly will work with families on a case-by-case basis if special circumstances warrant any change to their schedule.
We will operate on a full day schedule. We will not be following an AM/PM schedule.
Yes. We do not anticipate any need to change student schedules while on the Simultaneous model.
Sports are dictated by San Diego CIF. We encourage you to access their website for more information: http://www.cifsds.org/
This is still to be determined.
This is still to be determined.
We have not considered this option at this time. Currently small groups such as ASB, clubs, and small athletic groups are being allowed on campus. These groups are following CDC recommendations in regards to social distancing.
This is still to be determined.
We are working with transportation to ensure that PUSD buses will be able to support our reopening plan.
We recently had a successful on-campus administration of the PSAT. Poway High does not normally administer the ACT. We will work with our district office in regards to offering the SAT on campus, if we are given permission.
Currently, teachers are allowed to come onto campus and work with small groups of students. This is at the discretion of the teacher.
We will not know the official cost until we know how many students and staff are officially returning to campus.
Each community that feeds into our high schools has unique needs. Additionally, the requests to return to campus vary greatly between each campus. While each high school has developed plans to meet the needs of their individual community, they have also been in constant communication with one another.
Yes. This is one of the advantages of the Simultaneous model.
We will be working with our choir teacher to ensure that our in-person students are performing in class within the recommendations provided by the CDC.
Yes. Students will need to bring an electronic device every day to school.
PHS believes that families should make a decision based upon the needs of the individual family.
