This is actually has quite a few connections to Fraction Talks
Transum has some great area mazes (digital style too!)
Don Steward's Site has some interesting area, angles, and length problems
There is also the book The Original Area Mazes that I like to use.
For a younger audience use a rectangle square units.
See below for more images I have used.
Choose a good section of sidewalk (smooth, no shadows.) How to tips
Draw the area out on an index card or other paper, I sometimes even include key measurements. Think about the scaling, although it doesn't have to completely be to scale.
Take a meter or yard stick with you. I use easily divisible numbers in my lengths to help. You can use paper if you don't have a meter stick.
Yard stick I use 36in and 24in often ( I usually use 3-4 inches = 1 unit on my index card)
Meter stick 72cm and 48cm lengths
Use a piece of paper (or index card for perpendicular angles)
Take a picture (overhead is best- watch for shadows). Crop the picture and post it on our Facebook Group, Instagram, or Twitter with the hashtag #mathwalk I would love it if you would tag @traciteacher so I can re-share your great work!
