In what I called "The Wave of Rebellion," I tried (tried) to explore, or rather, express my bitterness towards the ‘realities’ of art. It wasn’t hard to be inspired. I had homework. I had things I didn’t like. I had chores I didn’t want to do and I had school. Working on pieces for art became a chore and well, scribbling on a T-shirt didn’t.

All the pieces I have created over the school year follow the journey to my own self-acceptance and exploration of my gender identity. The pieces portray the inner turmoil I faced due to the lack of support from my family, and religious pressures I faced. All of my pieces have religious connotations, myself being represented as a devil in works representing the earlier parts of my life, then a transformation to an angel, representative of my newly gained self-love.

The inquiry that guided my sustained investigation was my personal experience with growing up as a woman, and seeing the world around me for what it truly was beyond its facade of beauty. I have a fondness for horror, which greatly influenced my line of investigation. I determined that the connection between the negatives associated with society would be best portrayed as the physical decay of the human body and its surroundings. I used symbols that I associate with my personal growth. Blood plays a large role in women’s lives, and is a part of puberty, commonly associated with a change in the body that is largely out of one’s control. A few other symbols I employed are closely related to pregnancy, a constant reminder of the body I’m in. I experimented a bit with detail, using watercolor to create textures like rust or diseased flesh. I switched between a more detailed style to a more simple one in an attempt to explore using bolder lines in my pieces. But I grew to prefer using pen which allowed for more intricate lines.

My focus is on my characters that are part of a cartoon idea that I have been developing for the past 4-5 years. I explore different tragic pasts and ideas, and how they shape people into who they are through the stories of my characters. I couple my character focused illustrative pieces with written narratives to explore a unique combination of multiple forms of art to try and convey something different through not just visuals. I use colored pencils to try and get the best bright and vibrant colors I can.
