How it works

How do we join the program?

The Wellness & SEL Program directs numerous projects and support services. Each work a little differently. Some of the programs are built into the school day and provided to ALL students at the school- no joining required.  Other services are by referral or request only.  Below are details and FAQ.

Wellness & Prevention

School Counseling is meant to contribute to the well being of ALL students, TK-5.  All Explorers participate in "SEL Live"; teaching social emotional skills in real time on the playground and throughout the day.  FUNKY FRIDAY Dance Parties are also for ALL!

Character Programs: Kindness Crew, Brain Trainers, Peace Patrol/Character Buddies are student application based.

How do SEL lessons work?

Social Emotional Education is a PUSD requirement and is integrated into the school day.  The Student Services Assistant delivers the district's SEL curriculum Second Step in TK through 3rd grade classes.  DS teachers integrate SEL activities and concepts into their classroom model.  The School Counselor delivers both district material and originally designed emotional intelligence/student success skill lessons to 4th-5th, as well as K-3 by request.

Do teachers refer students?

Teachers and Professional School Counselors are partners.  As a team, we consult to identify needs and opportunities for growth for all students.  Counselors review student records and cases.

Miss S, teaching staff, and admin team work together to design behavioral, emotional, student success oriented skill building action plans for TK-5.

Your child's teacher might tell you she/he is making the Wellness/SEL Program aware of the needs they observe.  Miss S may work with teacher to support classroom success as well as reach out to the family to offer to design a wellness action plan.

Can I request coaching for my child?

Parents can ask for additional support for their children.  Meeting individually with a student may or may not be the best way to achieve the desired goal. The first step of the process is evaluation.  Miss S will review the needs, goals, and requests and make recommendations on the best course of action in the form of a wellness plan. This plan can include school or community based supports (and often includes parent homework!).
