Hello! On behalf of the Portsmouth High School community I would like to provide a warm welcome to the 2024-25 Portsmouth High School Program of Studies!
After months of extensive planning, review, revision, and re-imagining, I am beyond proud to share the most recent iteration of this document. With increased elective offerings, the addition of two new Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, brand new in-school intervention opportunities, and a more accessible, web-based platform, it is our hope that this document provides students with the avenues and information necessary to achieve their maximum potential while exploring all that PHS has to offer.
At Portsmouth High School, we strive to provide an ever-improving, respectful community where all students are challenged to develop their intellectual curiosities and to use immense bodies of knowledge proficiently as they learn to value the past, thrive in the present, and prepare for the future.
We believe in taking calculated, academic risks that allow our students to explore their curiosities while developing a personalized understanding of our curriculum. We also understand that memorable learning experiences rarely happen by accident. With this in mind, we strive to bring our beliefs about learning to life by :
Continuously working to strengthen our school climate and culture by engaging all stakeholders in regular discourse and targeted intervention as needed
Encouraging students to share their unique talents and experiences with others
Recognizing that we are all life-long learners and valuing the reciprocity of teaching and learning as a social process. In other words, just as adolescents learn from adults... Adults must be open to learning from adolescents
Cultivating real-world learning experiences that extend student learning and interactions beyond the bounds of the PHS campus
Supporting our PHS faculty, staff, and administration in their work to provide students with a variety of intellectually stimulating environments that empower PHS learners to discover their passions.
Actively guiding the development of knowledgeable, respectful, and responsible individuals equipped with the skills needed to make the world a better place
The goal of this document/website is to provide visitors with the best possible understanding of our academic program, related supports, and guiding procedures en route to our generation's greatest right of passage: Graduation. It's no secret that the likelihood of our students' social, emotional, and academic success dramatically increases when they are surrounded by a village of informed, dedicated, and engaged stakeholders. It is with this eye towards partnership and collaboration that we have created this web version of our complete Program of Studies.
This upcoming school year presents us with continued, exciting opportunities to refine past practices, honor the great work that our students are involved with in the present, and plot the course for our community's promising future. As the landscape of 21st century teaching and learning continues to develop, the possibilities for providing our students with world-class experiences is literally endless. We look forward to collaborating with our students, families, and surrounding community on what is sure to be a memorable journey.
