Talbot Community School implements Second Step. Second step is a social-emotional learning program that explicitly teaches students how to develop a positive social and emotional health. "When students are better equipped to manage their own emotions, form healthy relationships, make good decisions, and cope with everyday social and academic challenges, they’re better equipped to learn." Second Step.
"Evidence-based Second Step SEL for K–5 includes everything schools need to integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) into their classrooms and schoolwide. Using the Second Step curriculum has been shown to decrease problem behaviors, and it’s designed to promote school success, self-regulation, and a sense of safety and support." ~Second Step www.secondstep.org
"In one study—conducted with 7,300 students and 321 teachers in 61 schools across six school districts—significant improvements in social-emotional competence and behavior were seen in children who started the school year with skill deficits in these areas. With Second Step SEL, children showed specific gains in prosocial skills, empathy, and conduct."
