Talbot Community School uses PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support) to help us establish and maintain a safe learning environment where everyone feels supported to teach and to learn. This model is a proactive, collaborative approach to discipline which focuses on teaching and supporting positive behavior across all school settings. PBIS changes the paradigm of focus from negative behaviors and exchanges to positive expectations and interactions. Emphasis is placed on prevention of problem behavior and the development of pro-social skills.
An important underlying belief of PBIS is that appropriate behaviors and social skills require direct instruction just like reading, writing and math. Research shows that when a school environment is positive and predictable, students feel safe, have better academic performance, higher test results, and make better behavioral choices. PBIS methods have been proven to significantly reduce the occurrence of problem behaviors in schools.
