Impromptu Showcase
Prior to awards, students will be invited to participate in an impromptu speaking showcase. This is an NSDA speech event not currently offered in Maine. Any student is welcome to participate. If you have questions or are looking for specific preparation material, please contact Krista. If you have a student who wishes to participate in the showcase, please let check-in know during registration.
What is impromptu speaking?
Students are given 3 quotations and a total of 7 minutes. Typically 2 minutes is used for prep time, and students give a 5 minute speech interpreting their choice of the three quotations. For examples, see the NSDA website. The judge will give time signals throughout the speech.
What do my competitors need?
Because this is an extemporaneous event, students don't need to worry too much about preparation. They may use an index card for the event, or write on the back of the quotation selection. It's helpful to brainstorm and practice general themes and examples ahead of time. Typically impromptu speeches have the following structure (similar to a five paragraph essay):
Attention Getter
Read the quotation
Interpret the quotation
Preview points
Point 1
Tie back to quotation
Point 2
Tie back to quotation
Point 3
Tie back to quotation
Conclude: Review quotation, interpretation, and 3 points
