Hello Students!!!

Listen to the book, Little Tree. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGquWvJH39M

Then think:

Think about the ways you've visibly changed, such as losing teeth or growing taller. What about the invisible changes that have happened in your hearts, heads, and hands, such as how they’ve become more confident or caring, gained new knowledge, or acquired new skills.

I'm so proud of all you have accomplished! Changes that have happened for all of you, each one of you in your own way....so different yet so similar.

If you can, share some of the ways you've changed with a family member. You've done many things and changed in many ways, be proud and clear!

Reading Work

Favorite Book Project

Monday - Thursday 5/18- 5/21 - keeping this up for those who need it :)

The assignments from last week (above if you still need them) should be done and ready to now help you create a "poster" or some type of display about your favorite book. I have a new tab on this page to provide some examples of how you can set up your work AND some materials you can access right in your home. Go visit it to help you plan what your work will look like this week. The idea is to share all the information you have prepared on or in some type of "poster" display. This display should teach your viewers so many wonderful details about your favorite book. You will show what you've enjoyed about your character, what you've learned about the problems and solutions, and how you were able to track the setting throughout the story. You'll do this with some colorful images for all three of these components. You'll need to make sure your work is easy to understand and interesting. There is a Rubric posted above to help you plan and complete your work....you should be able to check Met for every category when you're done!!

I'll be working on a platform to share these displays and I can support some of your work in Reading Zooms this week.

My thought is that this display will take you AT Least 2 days of reading time to complete and for many of you, more than that. Because you all work at different paces AND because some of you might not actually be ready to do this work yet, I'm posting this display as the reading assignment for the week.

SHOULD YOU FINISH THIS WORK BEFORE THURSDAY, you can spend your reading time, READING :) . Enjoy books independently for 30-40 minutes using all the amazing skills you've developed. And of course, I'll be posting chapters of The Reptile Room, Or Murder! for your viewing pleasure.

Tuesday 5/26

Okay, some students continue to work on Favorite Book Displays and that is just fine! Check out the work your friends have done on our project tab. :)

If you are finished with that, I would like you to revisit the story from Library last week Day 1 and then respond to the the following question:

Why is the title of the story To Be A Drum? Answer this in your notebook and use at least two details from the text to support your response.

And of course we are coming to the conclusion of The Reptile Room, Or Murder!

Chapter 11

chapter 11 for tuesday.mov

Wednesday 5/27

Follow the same routine as above and if you've finished your Favorite Book Project the revisit a story you heard weeks ago during library, The Hula Hoopin' Queen, Day 8

Then answer this question in your notebook: Who is the “real Hula-Hoopin’ Queen of 139th Street”? Use details from the story to support your response.

Chapter 12

chapter 12.mov

Thursday 5/28

Today you will also listen to a story and respond to it in writing in your notebook. The difference today is I haven't asked you to listen to this before. You may find it easier to listen to it twice and/or read the question BEFORE you listen and/or listen with a family member and then discuss your answer before writing about it. The book is called, Private I. Iguana and here is the link: Day 7

Here is the question: How do you think Liz and Leon felt about each other at the end of the story? Use details from the story to support your response.

Math Work

Monday 5/25 No School

Tuesday 5/26

Students, today you will be working with arrays. I need to remind you about some of the important vocabulary you need to remember to do this work. Rows go across like lines across paper and columns go up and down, like when you make a list.

Use this info to think about this work today and when the lesson says to use counters draw them in your notebook. Also, the warm up is a Which One Doesn't Belong? You really should be able to see this several different ways. Make your goal 3-4 ways and write each one in your notebook, with a reason why of course!!

Wednesday 5/27

Hello! Have fun with these activities about arrays. Whenever the activity indicates you should use counters, you can either draw the counters or use something from home...cereal, coins, small stones, anything that is the same size. Objects from home that aren't the same size won't work. :)

Thursday 5/28

Enjoy this fun popsicle activity and the think more about arrays. When it says be prepared to share your thinking, that means write down your thinking!! In our classroom we would have done this out loud as a whole group. At home you can write your thoughts. That will help them be even clearer in your mind :)

Create an obstacle in your room or your yard. Set up a series of things in which you can climb over, crawl under, hop thru, and stomp around. You can use a small space or a large space...just be sure you have permission to this before you create your course. Maybe after you go practice doing the moves you can challenge some family members to try it.

Writing Work

G2B4_HowDoAuthorsPaintPictures_Ch.pdf

Tuesday 5/26 - Thursday 5/28 -

I think most of you are done publishing but just in case I'm going to leave the resources here. Scroll down to the poetry lessons and begin work wherever you left off.

We will begin the week by finishing up publishing. It seemed, as I checked in with folks last week, that many of you still need time to finish this work. I'm going to leave the resources from last week here for you to access.

We will finish up the year by writing poetry and I'll begin to post lessons about that type of writing on Tuesday. You can start this work when you finish publishing your stories.

scroll to the bottom to see the video about revising, the checklists, and the Snap Word Book

Repeat:

Okay writers!! This week you will do MANY things. You will finish writing whatever story you are on and then you will begin the publishing process. Our process will involve lots of revision as you think about ALL the ideas we have been learning about and you go back into your stories to add to them and change them so that they are even better!! Don't forget to share with your family about revision stri and ways you can add to something that is already written.

There is also the editing component you'll need to pay attention to. You are almost in third grade!! You need to check your spelling, punctuation, and capitalization!! None of this work should be done quickly, take care to do a thorough job...like a third grader would. :) . I'm so proud of all you've learned and I can't wait to see your work!! And then, there is the fun coloring (if you haven't done it already)!

I'll keep this up for the week but I'll be adding tips and maybe videos as we go.

I've added the second grade checklist for narrative writing (realistic fiction falls into this category). You should use these as a reference as you work on revising and editing. :)

My Snap Word Book

Here is a copy of your snap word book...it is set up to be printed, which is why the letters aren't in order. You COULD print it if you have a printer, but if you don't you can scroll through and use this is a resource to check snap words in your writing as you edit.

Video on revising!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg1XEz_1pVU

This has great tips to remember and perspectives about why we should revise...the narrator refers to essays you have written, but in our case this means stories

IF YOU"VE FINISHED PUBLISHING!!

Watch my video lesson after you read this poem:

Why poetry?

Why?

Why sunsets?

Why trees?

Why birds?

Why seas?

Why you?

Why me?

Why families?

Why laugh?

Why cry?

Why hello?

Why goodbye?

Why poetry?

Wednesday 5/20

Yesterday I asked you to gather some objects from around your home to use for our poetry unit. Today I'm going to ask you to get those items, paper, a pencil, and a timer of some sort (maybe on your oven, a parent's phone, your device, or a watch or fitness tracker). You could also just read a clock and designate a start and end time...see how useful it is to be able to tell time???

For 10 minutes (set the timer or look at clock) simply look at the items. What do you notice? What else do you notice? Write down your observations. Try to use your poet eyes and add to your observations using this perspective. For example, you may have a pinecone. You might list that the pine cone is brown and has ridged edges. But with poet eyes you might start to see that a pinecone is like a wooden porcupine OR that a pinecone is like a tree for an elf or fairy. Capture all of these thoughts you have in the 10 minutes.

That's it writers....you are done for the day :)

G2B4S01_SW_Fig1-1.pdf

Thursday 5/21

A boy named Rob collected some items from around his home. One of the items he found was a smooth shell. He looked at that shell through his poet eyes and wrote down these words, the first image above is his messy version (which is perfectly fine) and then there is a typed version (just shown here to help you visualize what it could look like):

Once I found a tiny

shell. When I looked inside

it was shiny.

There was a thousand

other shiny shells but I just

picked one

smooth

sharp

curly

  • look at your work from yesterday.. choose one or two items in your pile and, using some of the words and descriptions you cam up with yesterday, try out a couple of poems.
  • If you need some more examples of what this could look like and sound like I've posted a sheet of poems written by students below

Tuesday 5/26

The idea to practice today is using line breaks. Watch the video then try out different ways to break your line as you write poems :)

Wednesday 5/27

I've posted some anchor charts that show the ideas we've been thinking about above.

Today you should watch the video I made and think about things that give you big feeling. Then think about something really specific about that thing or being and try to write a poem that shows that feeling. Most importantly, have fun!!

writing.mov

Thursday 5/28

Today I'd like you to go through your list of objects you collected to use for poetry, this might be in the form of a list, and go through each item/idea and ask youself the following questions: Does this give me strong feelings? Do I have specific ideas about why? If you say yes to these questions, then write a poem about why. If you've already written poems about all of these items, go out and create another short list. Maybe you head to your yard and look around at the familiar parts and places that you love about it. Choose a few and write about them. Play around with the line breaks. Remember that even though it isn't necessary to follow the rules of capitalization and punctuation, you can still use it and you definitely should be trying to spell with accuracy. Maybe you copy over the poems you have and make a small published looking section in your notebook to keep these special pieces. :)

Tuesday 5/26

Today you with think about how to tackle complex words when reading. One very useful strategy when reading complex (long and challenging) words is to find the word parts you know. You are very good at this work but the more complex the word, the trickier this gets. I'll start you with some warmup words to practice with:

  • and, stand, understand, understandable (this is complex but is built from other less complex words and an ending!
  • for, forget, forgetful, forgetfully
  • art, part, apart, apartment, apartments

See how this works?

Now read the following non fiction piece about stinks and find all the words are complex. Figure out the parts and write them down in your notebook the same way I modeled some examples above. I'll also do the first one I see.

pro, protect, protecting

Have fun!!

Hello Second-graders, soon to be third!!

There are lots of things that like to stick together- best friends, like Frog and Toad, almond butter and jelly, a pair of socks, salt and pepper.

Vowel patterns in words like to stick together also. When you're reading a word, it helps to keep these parts with vowels stuck together, like almond butter sticks to jelly!

Today I want you to solve a puzzle for me using the following word parts and letters. Match the vowel patterns to a beginning part and when you've made real words with all the parts, you've solved the puzzle! Some of the parts can go together in more than one way....you'll know you've got them right when they all have a match that you've only used once!!

Beginnings: vowel patterns:

  • b oat
  • t ine
  • p ire
  • f une
  • sh ain
  • sp eep
  • sl oke
  • br ace
