SPRING term
ROOM 101
New for 2026, the Room 101 scheme of work builds on the content presented in the Conspriacies theme of work and asks the big question: Can Those in Power be Trusted to Keep Us Safe? Learners choose one item, idea, or institution they believe should be banished to Room 101 because it fails to keep us safe or abuses its power. They must present a compelling, well-researched case to a panel (teachers, peers, or guest judges), using digital media, persuasive language, and critical thinking.
As part of this scheme of work, learners will study the tv show Room 101 and its structure and format, in addition to history of the TV show and its relationship with George Orwell's 1984. Learners will use this contextual frame as a springboard to study persuasive writing and deliver a paired presentation on the focus question.
Summer term
THE WOMAN IN BLACK
Was it just a bump in the night or was there something more sinister causing the noise at Eel Marsh House, where Arthur Kipps waited alone in the dark? As part of this scheme of work, you will study Susan Hill's Gothic masterpiece, 'The Woman in Black', in readiness for your Unit 2: Belonging NEA Coursework Task A in September 2026.
Building on the knowledge you will have already gained from reading the book and watching the film, you will study the context of the novel to understand Hill's intentions when writing the book, as well as the Gothic genre to understand how the text fits in with the wider Gothic tradition. You will revise word classes in order to develop your close analysis of linguistic features when analysing and put this to the test when you complete an Impressions extract from the early stages of the book.
