On Wednesday, April 12th, 8th grade students will be taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). The Michigan Department of Education selected PSAT as the required state assessment for all 8th grade students, which measures their growth in Math and English Language Arts.
In order to allow 8th graders the space and time to focus on this important test, 6th and 7th Grade students will be assigned a Career Exploration Assignment in Xello, our College and Career Exploration Online Program. Our Counselors will be visiting classes prior to April 12th to review Xello with the students and introduce the assignment. The assignment will be released on the 12th and turned in through Xello by 8:00 PM.
Work From Home Permission
6th and 7th Grade Parents and Guardians may use the form below to give their student permission to work from home on April 12th to complete the Xello Assignment. Teachers and Counselors will be available via Google Meet from 1:00-2:40 if students need assistance with the Xello Assignment.
Students without permission to work from home will be required to attend school that day and will work on the Xello Assignment at school.

Parents & Guardians,
We are excited to announce that the 8th Graders at Portage West Middle School have been personally invited to attend a science workshop at Western Michigan University on THURSDAY, APRIL 6th. This will be wonderful day of learning and hands-on activities, and a great chance for students to learn first hand about careers in science and engineering!
TRIP DETAILS: The entire field trip will take place on the main campus of Western Michigan University. Students will be placed into groups that will rotate through 8 different stations in different buildings on campus. We will be walking outside, so students will want to dress appropriately for the weather that day. Our buses will leave West Middle at 9:00 am to head on the field trip, and will be arriving back at school at approximately 2:20 pm. There is no cost to this field trip.
LUNCHES
Because this is an all day field trip, students will need to eat lunch while on the trip. There are two options:
1) Students can order a sack lunch from the school (orders will be taken in Science class), or
2) Students may bring a lunch from home.
Microwaves will NOT be available to heat the food, and if your child does bring a lunch from home, fully disposable materials are highly recommended, because students will need to carry their lunches around with them throughout the field trip. Please discuss these lunch options with your child as soon as possible so that they know if they should be placing a school sack lunch order or not.
We will be using a new format for our Weekly Students Announcements this year. A copy will be emailed to each student on Monday afternoons. Students and families can also access the announcements on our Announcements Website - Click Here
