Meet the Teacher

Ms. Chelsea Whiteoak

I found my love of singing at a very young age. My parents often joke that I was "singing before I could speak."

I have been choral directing for over 5 years. I started directing in 10th grade when my choir director let me coach a middle school ensemble going to Solo & Ensemble. From there, I coached groups throughout my time at Southwest Michigan College & at Central Michigan University. After receiving my bachelors of Music Education from CMU, I worked for Airport Community Schools. During my time at Airport I revived their choral program & continually earned high ratings at District & State choral festival.

I have also taught in Beijing, China. I taught for the University of Science Technology, Beijing's summer English program. It is a three week summer camp for freshman to immerse themselves with English native speakers. I helped to develop a curriculum based on American culture & ways of life. The goal of the program is to help Chinese students speak English. To help achieve that goal, I taught some American folk songs and choral singing to my students.

I strive to better myself every year by attending or presenting at conferences or participating in vocal & conducting masterclasses. I perform in musicals, sing in community choirs, and perform soloistically for community events. Most recently, being invited to sing the Messiah as the soprano soloist. I believe that if I am regularly bettering myself I am able to greater serve my students.

In the choral classroom my goal is to help students find their voice through music literacy, understand their vocal mechanism while producing a healthy sound, & create empathetic, empowered people through a wide variety of choral literature. Overall, creating a life-long lover of music.
