Mission Statement
Portage West Middle School will offer the student athlete the opportunity for participation and will be given skills needed to be prepared for a lifetime of learning, enabling the student to meet life’s challenges.
To the Parent:
It should be remembered that participating in athletics is a privilege, not a right. The major focus is teaching skill, attitudes, knowledge and sportsmanship. Our parents should model the four WMS pillars: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Caring. The parent should help the coaches reinforce these four pillars. Parents are also encouraged to have conversations with their student to build on what it means to be part of a team, the responsibilities that go along with that, cooperation, dedication, and determination, all valuable team and lifetime skills.
To the Athlete:
The privilege you have earned to be part of an interscholastic athletic team at our school is a true extension of your work in the classroom. We hope you will benefit as much from your athletic experience as you do from academic endeavors. As a middle school athlete, the positive values learned on the playing field now, will help you in your transition to the high school and on into life. To better our school and ourselves we want you to reinforce the need for high levels of sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity in competition along with modeling the four WMS pillars: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Caring.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email me. Remember, I am teaching and interacting with the students six class periods during the school day. Feel free to call me, but just understand I may not be able to address your concerns right away, but will do my best to call you back at my earliest convenience. Email is welcome anytime throughout the day, but again, I will try to get back to you as soon as I can. If there is an emergency, please contact the office at 323-5800 and ask for Mr. Jason Messenger, principal at WMS. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Communication between Parents, Athletes, Coaches and Administrators
Parents and coaches are strongly encouraged to maintain open lines of communication.
A procedure has been developed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining the lines of communication between the school, parents/guardians, and students for the resolution of concerns related to the athletic program. A summary of the procedure is as
follows:
Step 1 - The athlete having a complaint or concern should speak personally with the coach. Out of respect for the athlete and coach it is recommended that concerns not be addressed immediately after a game.
Step 2 - The parent and athlete having a complaint or concern should speak personally with the coach. Out of respect for the athlete and coach it is recommended that concerns not be addressed immediately after a game.
Step 3- If concerns cannot be resolved by a conference with the coach, the parent and athlete may request a conference with the Athletic Director.
Step 4 - If concerns cannot be resolved in Step 3, the parent and athlete may request a conference with the building principal.
Parents please note: If you go to Step 4 without starting at Step 1 the building principal will direct you back to Step 1 and ask you follow the procedure we have in place.
Who does West compete against?
Portage West Middle School is part of the (KAMSL) Kalamazoo Area Middle School League Conference. The middle school conference is made up of 12 middle schools from the area.

10. Kalamazoo Maple St.

The league competes in all the sports listed with the exception of swimming which is only done in Portage.
Admission Prices
Parents please note that there is an admission/gate cost at every game. For all Kalamazoo, Portage and Mattawan schools there is an Adult-$3.00 charge and Student-$1.00 charge. Gull Lake is $3.00 for anyone, but children in elementary are free and their family cap is $15.00. Vicksburg charges Adults-$3.00 and Students-$2.00. All schools consider elementary to high school to be students.
However, Portage West considers students to be 6th through 12th grades. West does not charge for elementary age students. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you.
