Our Mission and Curriculum Standards

Our librarians follow the American Association for School Librarians (AASL) mission of an effective school library program, which is to ensure that all students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.


Portage Public Schools Library Media Specialists’ Common Beliefs

● Reading is a foundational skill for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment.

● Inquiry provides a framework for learning.

● Ethical behavior in the use of information must be taught.

● Technology skills are crucial to learning and for future success.

● Equitable access is a key component for education.

● The definition of information literacy has become more complex as resources and technologies have evolved.

● The continuing expansion of information demands that all individuals acquire the thinking skills that will enable them to work on their own.

● Individuals must acquire the skills to select, evaluate, and use information appropriately and effectively.

● Learning is enhanced by collaborating, sharing, and learning with others.

● Certified Library Media Specialists and school libraries are essential to the development of lifelong learners.

Standard 1: Follow an inquiry-based process in seeking knowledge in curricular subjects, and make real-world connections for this process in own life. AASL 1.1.1

Standard 2: Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions. AASL 1.1.4

Standard 3: Participate, collaborate, and communicate as members of a social and intellectual network of learners to gather and share information. AASL 3.1.2

Standard 4: Use technology and other information tools to analyze and organize information so it is useful. AASL 2.1.4

Standard 5: Read widely and fluently to make connections with self, the world, and previous reading. AASL 4.1.2

Standard 6: Demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. NETS 6
