One required method of construction is slab construction. Slabs are flat sheets of clay that, when dried to leather hard, can be put together to create boxes and other types of vessels. Slabs can also be used to create tiles. You and your group members are required to make one hard slab project - a slab box. Your slab box must have four equal sides, each consisting of a different texture, a lid with a ceramic lock, and decorative handle
The two videos below show you the basics for creating a simple slab box using leather hard clay
Also known as the soft slab method, the drape method starts similarly to slab construction by rolling out long thin sheets of clay. Instead of letting them dry to leather hard and then constructing your sculpture, you lay, or drape, your slab over a form. Keeping it draped over the form while it dries to leather hard helps it retain the shape of the form. You are required to make one drape project.Â
