Funding for the program is provided through elementary, middle and high school budgets, voluntary Portage Community School District Employee Payroll deductions, ALDI, The Alliant Energy Foundation, The Portage Greater Youth Education Foundation, and a multitude of individual donations. The program costs approximately $15,000 a year.

Food is purchased from the Second Harvest Food Bank of South Central Wisconsin and at the Portage ALDI store.

Bags are packed at Portage High School on Wednesday evenings by Portage High School student organizations and Portage area community groups. The bags are then transported via the Portage High School IDS program to the Rusch, Woodridge, John Muir and Endeavor, and Lewiston Elementaries on Thursday mornings. Approximately, 140 students/week received bags of food during the 2018-2019 school year.

2019-2020 will see the addition of our middle and high school into the program. Currently, we provide food to over 175 students a week throughout the district.

How is the food distributed?
Students are given a disposable bag with nonperishable food items in it prior to the weekend on Fridays at the end of the school day. Teachers inconspicuously provide the bags to students in their backpacks or as they are leaving the building. Students are also provided with food for long breaks such as winter break and spring break.

Students are provided two breakfast, two to four lunch/dinner, and two to four snack items for each weekend. Bags can include:
