The UOP Sport Charter sets out the values, behaviours and expectations that apply to everyone who participates in, delivers, supports or accesses sport and physical activity at the University of Portsmouth.
Whether you are using our facilities, competing for Team UOP, volunteering, coaching, leading a club, working in partnership with us, or employed within Sport and Recreation, this Charter applies to you.
Everything we do is guided by four values:
Value 1: Be Safe
Safety comes before performance, tradition, convenience or personal preference. Being Safe means demonstrating care towards ourselves and others. We take responsibility for protecting our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. We recognise that everyone has a role to play in creating physically, emotionally and psychologically safe sporting environments.
We will:
Follow safety rules, policies and guidance.
Act in ways that reduce risk to ourselves and others.
Respect safeguarding, wellbeing and welfare requirements.
Raise concerns when someone may be at risk.
Challenge unsafe behaviour where appropriate.
Understand that safety is everyone's responsibility.
Value 2. Be Person-Centred
People are at the heart of everything we do. We treat others with dignity, fairness and respect. We recognise that every individual has different experiences, backgrounds, identities, abilities and motivations for participating in sport. provides connection and a non-judgemental culture within our community.
We will:
Treat everyone with respect.
Create welcoming and inclusive environments.
Listen to and value different perspectives.
Consider the impact of our words and actions.
Promote belonging, connection and positive experiences.
Support the wellbeing and success of others.
Value 3. Be an Advocate
We all have a role in shaping culture. Being an advocate means leading through inclusivity, our actions, promoting positive behaviours and helping create environments where people feel confident to speak up and seek support.
We will:
Be positive role models.
Promote respect, inclusion and wellbeing.
Speak up when something doesn't feel right.
Support others to access help when needed.
Be an active bystander to challenge discrimination, bullying and inappropriate behaviour.
Positively represent UOP Sport and the University community.
Value 4. Be Responsible
Participation in UOP Sport is a privilege. We take ownership of our behaviour, decisions and their impact on others. We recognise that what we do in person, online and in the wider community reflects on ourselves and UOP Sport.
We will:
Act honestly and with integrity.
Take ownership for our actions and decision making.
Follow University, facility and governing body requirements.
Use facilities, equipment and resources appropriately.
Respect the roles and responsibilities of others.
Understand the wider impact of our behaviour.

The Student Conduct Policy outlines outlines acceptable behaviour of students at the University, both on and off of the University campus, in order to secure the proper working of the University
The University is committed to providing a fair, supportive and respectful student casework and complaints service. The standards of behaviour that apply when engaging with the Student Casework Team and staff involved in student casework procedures or the Complaints Procedures for Applicants or Members of the Public are outlined in the Working Together Respectfully Guidance
The Safeguarding Policy outlines the University’s commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for all who study at, work at and visit the University
The Dignity and Respect Policy sets out the University’s commitment to delivering a working and learning environment of dignity and respect, free from harassment and bullying, and adhering to the Equality Act 2010
The Sexual Misconduct Policy outlines the University of Portsmouth's policy on sexual misconduct, including definitions, reporting procedures, support services, and disciplinary actions
The Fitness to Study Policy provides a transparent, robust and equitable approach where there are serious and significant concerns for a student and their ability to engage in university-related activities, such as undertaking academic study, managing the demands of university life, and adhering to the Student Charter and relevant University policies
The Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech and Expression supports the principles of academic freedom as defined in the Code of Practice. The Code sets out the University’s approach to freedom of speech and academic freedom, its value to the University, and how the University promotes and secures those rights for members of its community.
