Race Equality Week 2023 - 6th-10th February - Message from Debbie Withers
Race Equality Week is an annual UK-wide movement uniting thousands of organisations and individuals to address the barriers to race equality in the workplace. The theme for 2023 is #ItsEveryonesBusiness because tackling race inequality is everyone’s business. #ActionDrivesChange
WHY GET INVOLVED?
There are many barriers to driving race equality, including a lack of understanding of what it feels like to be in others’ shoes and what it means to be positively inclusive Small changes can make a real difference in how people feel. Culture can be measured by how your colleagues feel on a Sunday about coming to work on a Monday! Over the next 5 days, we ask you to take 5-minutes each day to self-reflect and commit to action that will drive this change. If we can involve the majority of your colleagues, if not everyone, within your organisation, we believe we will see a much-needed shift, in beliefs, cultures, behaviours, and outcomes for race equality. That is why the 2023 Race Equality Week theme is #ItsEveryonesBusiness.
Global Mobility Moodle Site - Message from Leanna Wynne
Our faculty now has a Global Mobility Moodle site under the heading 'Faculty of Science and Health - Global Opportunities'. Please enrol and explore. This site covers the Global Opportunities that are available to you as a student of the Faculty of Science and Health. This could be from promotions of upcoming events, to guiding you through the processes to travel overseas.
Whether this is for study abroad, work abroad, field trips, research opportunities or summer schools. You can find useful information about where you can go, how you can apply and all the up to date information about the overseas opportunities available to you.
Whilst UPDA does not have mobilities within the teaching blocks, we are looking to offer mobilities over the summer period each year and this is currently a work in progress. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Simulated Clinical Practice on Clinic - Message from Sarah Barber
If a student is carrying our simulated restorative clinical skills on the mobile phantom heads on clinic (when a patient cancels or DNAs) please remember the students must use teeth from their individual named tooth pots - kept on the shelves in Bay 1 on West Clinic. Students should use all surfaces of these allocated teeth to maximise usage and minimise waste. When all teeth / surfaces are exhausted please ask the clinical module coordinator for a new tooth.
Fundraiser - Message from Laura Durrant L6 DHDT
I am a 3rd year Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy student at UoP. In July 2024 I will be going to Malawi to do outreach dental care for those in pain.
There is a desperate need for dental care in Malawi – a country with fewer than 50 dentists for a population of 19 million people. Therefore, many people in rural areas are suffering due to a lack of access to dental care. I will be returning to Malawi in July 2024 to support this mission. All donations are welcomed. Thank you in advance.

Following the Student Voice Committee and to facilitate communication across the Dental Academy, online discussion forums have been set up on your course Moodle pages (in the first section of the course specific Moodle sites towards the top of the page) and there is one for each level of students so that communications can be directed between us (academic team) and specific student groups but you will have access to L 4, L5 and L6 course forums.
If you have questions, comments, or feedback that you would like to raise on a course level please post your questions. Your course lead will monitor the discussion posts regularly and we hope this will work to improve communication between students and staff.

If you will be absent from clinic or phantom head, you must call the absence phone line (023 9284 3946) BEFORE 8.15am on the FIRST day of your absence (please state your full name, course and what level you are).
Please then complete the Clinical Absence Form - THIS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ADDITION TO YOUR CALL
The clinical absence form must be completed for all forms of clinical absence regardless of how long you will be absent for and regardless of whether you are an operator or clinical partner on the clinic or in phantom head. It can be completed in advance if you know you are going to be absent. It must also be completed if you attend a clinical or phantom head session and then leave for any reason and do not complete your full timetabled session.
Authorised Absence for 5 days or more
If you are going to be absent from any timetabled session for 5 days or more and you would like this absence authorised, you must complete the Authorised Absence Form managed by the Anglesea Hub.
NB: If your absence is NOT for clinical and/or phantom head sessions and it is NOT for 5 days or more then you DO NOT need to complete any of these forms. In such cases please email your personal tutor and the academic member of staff leading the session you will miss and make them aware of your absence and the reason for it.
