Lessons Learnt from the Impact of the War on University Students Studying in the Ukraine
Since the commencement of hostilities in Ukraine on February 24th, 2022, there has been significant devastation inflicted upon its civilian populace, manifesting in profound emotional and physical tolls. This study primarily centres on the perceived ramifications on academic performance, examining the intricate dynamics between academic achievement, levels of social interaction, and attitudes toward learning both prior to and amidst the conflict, subsequently elucidating their collective impact on overall well-being. Surveys were administered to students enrolled at one of nine Ukrainian universities during June 2023, yielding a total of 647 responses. Our principal observations reveal a positive correlation between favourable academic dispositions, such as consistent class attendance and punctuality, and academic performance, both prior to the onset of conflict and presently.
Conversely, individuals exhibiting subpar academic attitudes experienced a more pronounced decline in academic achievement during the period of conflict. While robust social interactions were associated with improved academic outcomes before the outbreak of war, their influence on grades diminished during the conflict. Notably, a direct association between overall well-being and academic grades was not identified. Nonetheless, heightened levels of well-being detrimentally affected academic attitudes, subsequently leading to diminished academic performance.
