Co-creation Through enABLe
The University’s blended and connected approach to teaching has been recognised as outstanding practice by the TEF panel, with the enABLe process representing a key component of the institution’s student-centred curriculum design. While invitations to enABLe workshops have often been extended to student course representatives with mixed results, this paper proposes to explore an innovative approach to module-level learning design that places an emphasis on students as a core component of the design team.
Pioneered by Dr Matt Miller-Dicks and Dr Harry Ramsey in the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science, an enABLe workshop was organised with the involvement of 8 students who had recently completed modules with the aforementioned lecturers. Students took a positive approach to team-based co-creation discussions within the workshop and were actively involved in selecting key features they felt the modules already possessed and could be further enhanced, including features of assessments. Crucially, the event provided an opportunity for lecturers to discuss detailed and specific feedback from students on their modules that went well beyond the somewhat limited nature of online module evaluation forms. This enABLe workshop therefore provided a platform for reflective practice to enhance future teaching and assessment design. Students who participated in the workshop will be invited to attend the conference session to share their thoughts on the experience.
