Dr Ellen Buck, Pro Vice-Chancellor Education and Student Experience
Middlesex University.
About session:
New pedagogies are inevitably daunting beasts. They come with questions, concerns, challenge – and also opportunity. More than a delivery model, block asks institutions considering adoption to take look across the whole academic ecosystem, - reimagining policy, learning teaching and assessment practice, and all the services, and systems which underpin and drive the student lifecycle. This level of change asks us to make bold choices, to build from the ground up and to place students at the heart of what we do. This presentation will provide colleagues with insight into the questions, concerns, challenges and opportunities encountered in implementing block. It will encourage conversation and consideration of how the beasts and mini-beasts can be tamed to provide supportive and compassionate ways for working – for our students and our staff.
Profile
Ellen has significant experience of transforming learning and teaching, and student experience. Having led the University of Suffolk’s COVID-19 response for learning and teaching, she developed and implemented the Block and Blend method of designing and delivering curriculum, making Suffolk the first university in the UK to roll out block approaches at undergraduate level. As a result, continuation rates increased by 13% and the University achieved TEF Silver in all components. She has experience of working with apprenticeships, securing an Ofsted rating of Good for the quality of learning and teaching and has worked with a range of further education and private providers in the UK and internationally.
This session will be of particular interest to those colleagues planning block teaching as part of the University's Connected Curriculum developments.
Colleagues from across the sector are also welcome to attend.
