I will look to dissect what engagement looks like in a digital sense at the University of Portsmouth and some of the tools and metrics available to staff that help paint an accurate picture of a student’s activity on our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle). The presentation will touch on the experiences of the eLearn team that regularly have to analyse and play detective for academic offences and appeals as well as supporting tutors and ASDAC.
With the increase of video usage, I will place a spotlight on Content Capture. How its existence and placement does not guarantee understanding and changing the perception of what a view is to “minutes delivered”.
We will look at the barriers to accuracy, the dangers of overinterpreting or assuming from grey data and the ease in which we lose sight of the student as a person rather than a metric.
The final section will look at how a good blended and connected approach to digital content and early planning at the course approval stage not only will help with engagement and the accessibility of learning materials, but how it can help cast the net to help identify the disengaged at an early point. Hopefully aiding wave 1 intervention and allowing students to continue their learning journey.
