I know this is a couple of years old now but it does shed a harrowing light on why we need to have joined up communication between us about absences
Absence Procedure (this is directly from the Course Handbook which is available on the Mentor Information Centre)
If you are unwell and therefore unable to attend your placement you must contact your subject mentor, professional mentor and any class tutor who may be impacted by your absence in accordance with your college policy.
You should also email all parties; Professional Mentor, Subject Mentor, Class Tutor and jo.elliott@port.ac.uk before 8.00am and complete an absence GoogleForm.
If you have any concerns about the physical or mental health of your trainee, please let me know ASAP. Similarly, if they have not reported an absence to you, please let me know urgently. I would hope that if they have not reported an absence to you, you all would get in touch and your own safeguarding/welfare procedures would happen. But, based on the report above, this isn't always the case which is deeply distressing.
Please discuss student wellbeing and the trainees own health and wellbeing in your PDR Meetings. It is vital that they maintain a healthy work/life balance and do not get overwhelmed, while at the same time, carrying out a very stressful job and course. Please discuss time management techniques and ways to streamline processes to help support their workload.
Trainees have all booked in and I am carrying out the first joint observations which are well underway and going well!
They should have completed their peer observation on Pedagogy by now and be carrying out their Behaviour Peer Observation which should be completed by the end of November
They should be booking in their next formal observation with you as subject mentor which should take place in December. This is a solo observation just with yourselves and I will send more information on the content of this observation next week. I am talking to all mentors about this as part of this observation training process.
The focus is behaviour at the moment so please engage your trainee in discussing the following:
a. Professional Behaviour expectations and policy for teachers in your college eg registers, lanyards, systems, procedures. There is not a set list for these as every college have their own internal expectations for teachers and your trainee needs to be aware of these for their next observation
b. Behaviour Management Policies of the college and the department. Signpost to written policies and ensure the trainees know what the expectation is with lateness, attendance, sanctions, rewards, mobile phones etc. Again, there is not a set list as each college has different expectations but they need to be clear about these for their observation 3
Trainees should be teaching around 4 hours per week
Trainees should be in a classroom observing teaching for around 8 hours per week
Please recheck the guidance sent at the beginning of the course regarding this. The picture below shows where we are in that initial topic plan/scheme. The orange line is half term, the green lines are Christmas Break and the blue is highlighting where we are this week.
The whole Mentor Scheme can be found here for your convenience
Please keep meeting weekly working through the PDR and email if you have any questions or concerns.
