Newsletter
Hello Families!!
What a fun-filled first week of school we have had! It was amazing getting to know each child and their unique personalities. Devon and I are excited to go on this Pre-K adventure with them all!
Please keep an eye out for weekly newsletters from our class with information regarding what your children worked on during that week as well as what the following week will include. If we are discussing a specific topic, season, holiday etc., please feel free to continue the discussions or readings at home. The class/home relationship is important to us and we encourage families to continue the learning process at home. It takes a village!!!!
Next week, Mrs. Mennella and I will be calling all families to chat about your children’s first week in Pre-K. Although there have been a few tears on some mornings, they have only lasted for a few seconds. The children quickly bounce back and eagerly jump into whatever classroom activity is going on.
Please take a moment to check out some of the pictures we have taken of the children, enjoying both indoor and outdoor activities. The pictures can be found on the website. Pictures will be added weekly onto the classroom website, alongside the newsletter every Friday.
Have a great weekend!!!
Ms. Gomez and Mrs. Mennella

AUTUMN WINDS
Autumn winds begin to blow,
colored leaves fall fast and slow.
Whirling, twirling all around,
till at last they touch the ground.
This week we:
-Continued our discussion about “self” and defined the word “family”. In the book, Families are Different, a family is defined as people glued together with a special kind of glue called love.

-Began to discuss the approaching change of season (Fall).

In past years, we have witnessed these friendships grow from year to year. We will post pictures of these buddy moments for you to enjoy as well.

Continued our discussion about Puerto Rico. We watched how Vejigante masks are made (Paper, wood and coconut) and what they are traditionally used for on the island. I brought to school my own vejigante (pronounced veh-hay-gan-tay) mask in order to show the children the intricate detail that goes into these masks. We will begin to make our own masks next week. We are sure they will be amazing. Also, we discussed flags, their significance as well as looked at a variety of flags from around the world. The children will create Puerto Rican flags using paint.
Continued our family discussions and what makes a family, "a family". This discussion will lead into a family unit whereby parents will be asked to come to our class to talk about what it was like the day your child joined the family. Was it a sunny day? Snowy? A heat wave? How did you get to the hospital? Who was at the hospital and who was home awaiting their arrival? Next week, we will discuss questions words (who, what, where, why, how etc) with the kids to prepare them for your visit. Your visit should take about 15-20 minutes in total. Little leaves fall gently down,
Red and yellow, orange and brown.
Whirling, whirling round and round,
Quietly without a sound,
Falling softly to the ground,
Down…….and down……and down……..and down.
Recently we:
Created hand printed Puerto Rican flags. They look amazing!
Discussed the reasons why countries have flags. Additionally, after reading the book, Areli Is A Dreamer we had an amazing discussion regarding what it means to be an immigrant. We shared that Ms. Gomez did not speak English upon entering school, and had to learn how to communicate with friends. Ms. Gomez then instructed the children to wash hands and head to the table for lunch, IN SPANISH!!! We discussed how it felt to not understand the instruction, and yet be expected to follow what needed to be done. Quite interesting.

We discussed that they needed to make their OWN choice based on their own likes and dislikes. Additionally, we discussed that although more names appeared on one side than the other, there wasn't a “loser”, and that the choice was a personal preference. We also instructed the kids to NOT be influenced by a friend sitting nearby, because this was a “real” vote!!!!! They will be served the lunch they chose on the day of our trip. Talk about accountability!!!!!!!!

January now is here,
a fine new start for a
Whole new year.

B For Bearded Dragon
Have you ever met the bearded dragon?
Not a dragon in disguise?
She’s not fiery or ferocious,
She is friendly and quite wise.
If you ever see her basking,
She might bob her head and wave.
She might even change her color if she is feeling sort of brave!
We could learn a little from her - keep on climbing and branch out.
Be rock steady, bask in the sunshine
That's what life is all about..
