Argentina

Argentina has a high percentage of people of European descent in their population because of political interests in the past. At the end of the 19th century Argentina was considered an example of “new development” which attracted immigration and investment. In the 1860s and 70s Argentina's government encouraged European immigration causing a large influx of Europeans into the country. At the same time, Argentina persecuted Indigenous people, including through military campaigns, and diminished Indigenous history, as they thought the country would be most successful if it was Eurocentric. Argentina gained a Spanish-speaking and Catholic society around 1900 when Argentina experienced immigration from Italy and Spain causing variations of Spanish to be spoken around the country.
