Fragments of INGEN (Outis) or Fragments of NOBODY (Nobody) is an exhibition of recent paintings by Swedish artist Anton Örstrand, which draws inspiration from the stories of Greek mythology and their relation to contemporary life.
The paintings refer to the story of Polyphemus the giant cyclops, who trapped Odysseus and his men in a cave. Odysseus then tricked Polyphemus into believing his name was ‘Outis’, or ‘Nobody’ and when Odysseus blinded Polyphemus with a burning stake, he cried ‘Nobody’ had wounded him and failed to get help from his fellow cyclopes.
Örstrand reinterprets this tale through the lens of his everyday reality, where toys become ancient warriors and the claustrophobia of apartment living becomes cave imprisonment. INGEN (Outis) embraces Nobody as the hero protagonist, who seeks answers about belonging and identity through investigations of his mundane existence.
Anton Örstrand was born in 1981, Malmö, Sweden, where he continues to live and work. He completed Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Konstfack University of Fine Arts & Crafts, Stockholm (2013-18) and the University of the Arts Pozan, Poland (2017).
