Lesson 1- To help review the various information we have learned about naqamȼu (Ksanka/Kootenai) / sp̓éƛ̓m (Selis/Qlispe) / Bitterroot (English) / Lewisia rediviva (Latin-botanical), I would like you to take a few minutes to add details to the K and W of the K-W-L chart. There are some guiding prompts in the K and W columns to help you organize what you already KNOW and what you WANT to know or what you WONDER about Bitterroot.
**If you are unable to print the K-W-L Chart, just recreate the chart on some paper at home.Think about our activities in the garden, and the discussions we have had about the timing of the emergence of this amazing plant. In case you have forgotten the first story we listened to/watched, there is a link to The Story of the Bitterroot, part 1, below. Please watch it from the beginning. There are other videos in this series, but for the this part of the lesson, we focused just on part 1.
Lesson 2- Read the book, "The Gift of the Bitterroot" that is also linked. The copy of this book was obtained by "Lessons of Our Land" and is for educational uses/purposes only. This story is a little different from the video. Both the video and the book have similarities and have a large input from Johnny Arlee. The last few pages of the book have more information, from the Selis/Qlispe (Salish & Pend d'Oreille) perspective surrounding the Cultural importance and practices of sp̓éƛ̓m (Bitterroot).
Lesson 3- Based on review of the video and reading the Selis/Qlispe perspective in "The Gift of the Bitterroot", add at least four (4) ideas to the "What I Learned" column on the K-W-L Chart. Did you answer any of the "W" questions or curiosities? Did what you just learned lead to more questions?
Week 2- Lessons 1-3 NAS Native Games review and practice
The details to Week 2's Enrichment Lessons are in the Google Doc attached above or below (depending on how the page loads on your device). I thought this would be a good way to wrap up our quarter together for our Native American Studies class. All three lesson directions are outlined on the first page, with the detailed game directions/rules written out on the rest of the pages.
I am sad that we have missed the past few Fridays, which were always a fun way to wrap up our week by learning about and playing a different Montana based Native American Game. I am sad that we were unable to finish our class projects such as our thumb-drum or our MT Tribal Flags-display project. I will post a few more extension activities here throughout this week or over Spring Break to wrap up our Climate Change explorations that we started with our pine cone/pine seed project or our Seasonal Rounds we explored when we started our naqamȼu/sp̓éƛ̓m observations.
I hope you and your family/friends continue to be well and are staying healthy and as active as possible as we are under our Shelter-in-Place orders. Please remember that you can reach out to me via email (awilliams@polson.k12.mt.us) or through my classroom phone at 406-883-6335 -when the automated message comes on, press my extension- 327. Even though we are not necessarily in the classroom this week, we are able to receive our classroom calls on our personal phones. I hope to see you all soon! Again, stay healthy and well.
