If my child doesn’t place in AIG, can he/she be re-tested?
Yes. A student can be nominated again and can be retested (Grades K-5) every two years. Students at level 5 achievement in a subject area (Grades 6-12) for two consecutive years are identified as AIG. See identification criteria: Polk County Schools AIG Identification Criteria
Does my child get a grade on their report card for AIG (Grades 3-5)?
No. Families are encouraged to maintain communication with AIG Specialists.
What does my child do in class once they are officially identified? How often and how long are Advanced Learning/AIG classes?
Identified AIG students receive a Differentiated Education Plan DEP Elementary which outlines services. Students receive differentiated education in their regular classrooms; in grades 3-5, the AIG specialist provides more extensive classroom consultation, co-teaching, and/or instruction in a separate setting (approx. 45 min/week) for the purpose of implementing, extending and enriching the NC State Standards. For more detail, please see Advanced Learning/AIG Classes.
Is AIG service for my child only once a week?
While AIG specialists may provide 1-2 times a week pull-out services (3-5), classroom teachers provide differentiated instruction for AIG students daily. AIG Specialists may serve students by going into the classroom to co-teach or assist the regular classroom teacher with differentiated/planning instructional units.
How does my child get in AIG class?
Parent(s), guardian(s), and school personnel may refer students for AIG evaluation. Students may also refer themselves. Students need to meet achievement and aptitude criteria. See Screening/Referral or contact your school's AIG Specialist for more information.
Are there any after school AIG enrichment offerings?
Most schools have different opportunities for after-school activities or enrichment. Please see Clubs, Camps and Enrichment
We are from another district or state and my child was in AIG/Advanced classes at his/her previous school. Will he/she be in AIG in Polk County?
Gifted students who are currently identified in a NC public school will maintain their AIG identification. Student performance and assessment data is used to determine appropriate services. Transfer students identified as gifted in other states or private schools must meet Polk County Schools AIG identification criteria.
