My name is Melissa Willis and I recently moved to Rockmart, Georgia and became a special education teacher at Van Wert Elementary. I am very excited to be a Jacket again this school year! Prior to the move I worked for the Forsyth County School District for 15 years. The last 12 years I was a Special Education Teacher, IRR, where I worked with students in co-taught and small-group settings. I began my teaching career as a paraprofessional 15 years ago. That's when I decided to return to school and complete the teaching certification program through Western Governor's University where I earned a B.A. in Special Education. This was a dual enrollent program so I also became certified in Early Childhood Education. After my student internship I also added the Middle Grades ELA certification. Prior to all of this just after high school, I earned an associates degree in business/marketing through UNG/LanierTech.
Over the years I have attended many trainings and received many different certifications that provide intervention tools to be used in the classroom with my students within their academic and behavior support needs. Some examples are Orton Gillingham (70 hours), UFLI, Orton Gillingham Math, SIMS Writing Strategies, Wilson Reading, PBIS, Mindfulness, ARC Reading Program, Eureka Math, etc. I have served on several literacy committees as well to always continue my learning and practice in the Science of Reading to promote effective learning strategies with students who display dyslexia characteristics. I recently was Mindset certified with PSD as well.
I have been happily married now for 30 years to my husband, Jay. We have two adult children: Hunter and Kendel. Hunter is employed in the world of IT and Kendel attends UNG-Oconee working on obtaining her education degree. We have one dog, a Westie named Allie. I enjoy traveling, spending time with my family, attending church, reading a good book, and drinking green tea. (I'm trying to fall back in love with exercising...just not quite there yet.)
