Assessments (Tests): A Common Unit Assessment (CUA) is given after each unit to assess a student's mastery of the content. A student may retake one CUA every nine weeks according to District policy. Therefore, once a nine week period passes, a student may retake one CUA of their choice. The student must initiate the process, receive remediation, and make arrangements with their teachers before retaking an assessment.
Daily Assignments: Students will receive approximately one daily grade per week. This may include a Warm-up Activity, participation in a class discussion/activity, a lesson activity, a homework assignment, or other assignment at the teacher's discretion. Students are encouraged to give their best effort on all assignments and assume each assignment will be graded.
Quizzes: Formative assessments will be given throughout a lesson to assess student understanding. Data from these quizzes helps the teacher monitor student progress and appropriately adjust the lessons to correct misconceptions. Quizzes also provide students with feedback about their own understanding of content.
A Note about Extra Credit: Throughout the school year, opportunities to earn extra credit will be given to students. Examples of these opportunities may include encouraging students to attend school-related events, use scratch paper on CUAs, and complete an activity outside of the classroom. Extra credit points may be added to a CUA, daily assignment, or quiz. The purpose of extra credit is to reward a student for extra effort. While a student's grade is important, the goal of every student should be to master each of the grade-level learning standards. Therefore, it is not appropriate for students or their parents/guardians to ask the teacher to assign extra credit to help a student raise their grade. When extra credit opportunities are offered, they will be posted on Google Classroom and will apply to all students.
Monitoring Your Student's Grades
Just as students are encouraged to regularly monitor their grades, parents/guardians are encouraged to do the same. If you encounter an issue logging into PowerSchool and need assistance, please contact the CMS front-office staff at 770-749-8850.
