COURSE DESCRIPTION: Environmental Science is designed for students to investigate the environment. This course will also focus on the following objectives: energy flow & cycles of matter, interconnection of all life, the stability & change in an ecosystem, conservation & resource allocation, and the evaluation of human activity & technology.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: All students are required to participate in laboratory activities, classroom discussions, skills practice, and small group activities.
MATERIALS NEEDED: Pencils and pens, 1-inch 3-ringed binder or section of larger notebook, paper folder with prongs, notebook paper, pack of colored pencils, pack of markers and glue sticks
GRADING:
60% Tests (Unit tests, benchmark tests, and projects)
20% Daily (homework, class work, quizzes, and labs)
20% Cumulative Semester Exam
CLASS WORK: Students are expected to actively and honestly participate on assignments during class time. Students that CHOOSE NOT to adhere to these expectations will not be allowed to complete or redo the assignment and the assignment grade will not be changed. A notation will be made in the comments section of the assignment on Power School. Students should always try their best, ask for assistance from teacher as needed and never cheat!
HOMEWORK POLICY: Students are to complete homework when it is assigned and be prepared to turn in completed assignments when requested. If it is not turned in on time, a zero will be given for the assignment. If you are absent the day a homework assignment is taken up, be ready to turn it in immediately on returning to class the following day.
LATE WORK: Points will be deducted for work turned in late. This includes all types of assignments.
RETESTING POLICY: Students will be allowed to retake one failed test each nine weeks. Students will be required to complete remediation before each retake.
CELL PHONE POLICY: Students will not be allowed to have their cell phones or ear buds out in my classroom. These items have become a distraction. All student cell phones will be stored in a designated place in the classroom. There will be disciplinary actions if a student disregards this classroom rule. First offense, student’s phone will be taken up and kept until the end of the day. Second offense, student’s phone will be taken up and the student will be assigned after school detention. Third offense, student’s phone will be taken up and the student will be given a pink slip.

Remind- Text @bf9ef23 to 81010 to sign up. This will put you on the Remind list, where you will receive reminder texts. No specific phone numbers will be exchanged.
PowerSchool-Be sure to check your child’s grades often using PowerSchool. Your access code can be obtained from the front office.
Teacher Online Classroom (PSD)- My teacher web site will include a calendar, upcoming events and various resources.
CLASS POLICIES/RULES: All policies of the Polk School District Board of Education and the student handbook will be enforced.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS/PROCEDURES:
All students are expected to keep a binder and paper. Date and label all assignments, labs, class notes, etc. Bring a writing utensil daily.
Place cell phone in designated area before the bell rings.
Start warm up activities when class begins.
Students are expected to work bell to bell. Do not put your materials up unless you are given permission. Sometimes time will be allowed to begin homework, but it must be used for this purpose.
Raise your hand to ask questions. Do not blurt out. Do not interrupt teachers or other students.
Students must remain in their assigned seat. Raise hand to ask permission to get out of seat.
Treat other with kindness and respect. This includes words and actions.
Be on time every day. The tardy policy will be strictly enforced.
Clean up around work area/desk at the end of the period so teacher can spray disinfectant on desks.
Follow the exit procedure outlined by teacher.
All PSD and CHS rules will be enforced.
Check your grades in PowerSchool often.
Keep your notebook organized. Do not throw any graded or returned work away AND always check PowerSchool for any grading mistakes. Make sure online assignments are submitted correctly and on time. If you should find a mistake do NOT freak out about it, bring it to my attention at an appropriate time and I will check on it at the earliest opportunity.
Handle situations sooner rather than later. See teacher before or after school if you need to talk outside of class time. You may also contact me by email. I am a reasonable person and understand that unexpected things can happen in our lives.
EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS:
Make sure your child completes homework assignments and studies for tests.
Help your child with material when possible.
Make sure your child sees me for extra help if needed, and encourage him/her to ask questions when necessary.
Make sure your child misses class only when ABSOLUTELY necessary. What is missed in class cannot be truly replaced with makeup work.
Make sure your child makes up missed work from absences as soon as possible.
Check your child’s grades on PowerSchool often (weekly). Upcoming tests and assignments are often posted ahead of time. Contact me by email with any questions as often as you feel necessary.
