Events and activites from the Spanish Honor Society:
General Meetings (2023-2024)- Throughout the school year Spanish Honor Society hosted in person and virtual general meetings. This is to get all the members together and discuss upcoming events.
Dog Drive (May 2024)- Our Spanish Society members had a dog supply drive where they donated cans of dog food and toys to the Safe Haven Puerto Rican Animal Rescue. This was very successful as many people donated and participated in the dog supply drive.
Food Drive (March 2024)- Our Spanish Society members had a second food drive where they donated cans of food to the Long Island Cares of Huntington Station. This was very successful as many people donated and participated in the food drive. Students then helped package the food in boxes and delivered them to the Long Island Cares in Huntington Station.
Display case (March 2024)- Our Spanish Honor Society board members helped to decorate the display case in the main lobby for world language.
JCC'S Martin Luther King Day Service (January 2024)- Our Spanish Honor Society members helped host the Baby Blessing Event at the JCC where new moms from various parts of Long Island are invited to shop for all their essential baby needs.
Holiday Cards (January 2024)- Our Spanish Honor Society members handmade cars in Spanish for the holidays. The cards were very well decorated and had lovely messages inside.
Food Drive (December 2023)- Our Spanish Society members donated cans of food to the Long Island Cares of Huntington Station. This was very successful as many people donated and participated in the food drive. Students then helped package the food in boxes and delivered them to the Long Island Cares in Huntington Station.
Moe's Fundraiser (November 2023)- Our Moe’s Fundraiser was a huge success! Many members of Spanish Honor Society enjoyed the variety of options at Moe’s! ¡Qué Delicioso!
Club Fair (September 2023)- Our board members helped promote and speak Spanish at the club fair at the highschool. This was to all students of the school. Students were able to spin a wheel and answer spanish questions for a prize. Students from all backgrounds and clubs participated in our activities! We welcome our new members as well!
Diversity Night (February 13th)- Spanish Honor Society just hosted a Carnival at Diversity Night! Some activities include Karaoke, Spin-the-Wheel Trivia, Create-Your-Own Playdough Alebrije, Cultural Presentations, Foreign Food Tastings, Pinatas, Make-Your-Own Salsa, a Photobooth, Bracelet-Making, Temporary Tattoos, a live band, and more! Students of all ages across Plainview enjoyed the various activities and excitement.
Food Drive (November 16th-December 2nd)- The Spanish Honor Society donated 513 pounds of food to Long Island Cares in a primarily Spanish-speaking region of Long Island. Wahoo! Thank you to all those who donated!
Moe's Fundraiser (November 29th)- Our Moe’s Fundraiser was a huge success! Members enjoyed the variety of options at Moe’s! ¡Qué Delicioso!
Day of the Dead Table (November 2nd)- ¡Una mesa para el día de los muertos! The Spanish Honor Society celebrated for the Day of the Dead with a table of activities! Students colored calaveras (sugar skulls) and enjoyed the Photo Booth! The wheel of prizes is always a hit too :)

Moe's Party- We had a blast at our end-of-the-year Moe’s Party! All that fundraising paid off for our members to enjoy a gourmet burrito! Chicken? Steak? Vegetarian? We had it all! Don’t forget about the delicious cookie dessert! ¡Qué perfecto!
Cinco De Mayo (May 5th)- !Feliz Cinco De Mayo! We celebrated Cinco de Mayo by setting up a table in our schools' lobby. Here students stopped by throughout the day to answer Cinco de Mayo trivia for a prize! Our Photo Booth was also a hit for all!

Meeting With Southampton Animal Rescue Center- At our last meeting we had an in person guest from the Southampton Animal Rescue Center. This organization helps to rescue and rebahilitate animals from all over the world, even Spanish- speaking countries such as Puerto Rico and Mexico. We thank them for all that they do!

Virtual Tour of Segovia, Spain- During one of our past meetings we had a virtual tour guide take us through a trip of Segovia, Spain. We got to see and learn aboout the Aqueduct of Segovia, streets of Segovia and numerous temples and curches' histories during the live tour!

World Language Week (October 17th-October 21st)- We had an amazing booth and turn out at this years' World Language Week. Students stopped by throughout the day to answer Spanish related questions for a prize!

Holiday Wall Decorating Contest- Our members were given an opportunity to participate in our holiday wall decorating contest to fundraise money to be donated. Each group of students worked in teams and were given a sqaure on our school's walls to decorate with the holiday of their choice from around the world. These all came out beautifully!

Written Holiday Cards(November 9th- December 9th)- Members of our honor society joined together to write and decorate holiday cards in spanish. These cards where then distributed to members of our community in time for the holidays this year. There were a lot beautiful submissions, thank you to everyone who participated.

Thanksgiving Food Drive- We collaborated with the Lion's Club and the SADD Club to collect non-perishable food items! Thank you to everyone who donated!

Spanish Heritage Month (display case) (Spetember 15th-October 15th)- Our executive board decorated the display case in the main loby to spread awareness for spanish heritage month, which is from September 15th through October 15. The board did a great job!

Hispanic Dish Creation - Students researched the history behind a Hispanic Dish and cooked it for their families. Students enjoyed their special meal with their loved ones!

NY Safe Haven Animal Rescue - Students aided the NY Safe Haven Animal Rescue, a Puerto Rican animal rescue, by donating dog toys. This aided in their trip to New York and the students who participated were awarded community service.

Spanish Speaking Country Presentation - Students would earn community service through the creation of a presentation about a Spanish speaking country. Various information was to be included such as food, language, and holidays. The presentations were completed in Spanish.

Moe's and Duchess Cookie Fundraisers (April 14th)- Students had the opportunity to attend our fundraisers and show a flyer to support the Spanish Honor Society. The fundraisers took place on different days and a percentage of sales with the flyer would contribute to the Spanish Honor Society.

Spanish Get Well Soon Cards - Students created three handmade cards to give to patients at Stony Brook Hospital. The cards were created and written in Spanish.

Venezuela Food & Supply Drive - This event started on Wednesday, 12/16 but due to school closures, it was extended until after winter break. This is an opportunity for Spanish Honor Society to support Venezuela during its economic crisis by donating goods that are needed there. These goods will then be shipped. Students will also have to write a short piece in Spanish about the situation in Venezuela.

Hofstra Thesis Assistance - A few AP female students volunteered to record themselves speaking in Spanish, English, and then both for an Alumna’s thesis project at Hofstra. Seen in this picture is a portion of the reading done by our members to aid in the completion of the thesis.

Career Cafe - We partnered with DECA and gave members a community service opportunity to attend a career cafe that they are interested in. Their requirements were to attend the meeting and then write a brief summary about what they learned and how knowing Spanish can help them in the future.

Tutoring - So far this year, six students have been tutored in Spanish by Spanish Honor Society members. This past week, quite a few more were matched up. We are reaching out to more teachers so we can pair up more members who volunteered to tutor.

Día de los Muertos (Display Case and Research Assignment) (November 1st) - The senior board decorated the lobby’s display case for the Day of the Dead. It came out great and it was a good sending off project for Mrs. Visbal. For DDLM, members were also given the opportunity to create a slideshow or collage about the holiday to learn more about the celebration.

Induction Ceremony - The board recorded videos for the induction ceremony video that was posted on the district website. The board also created a slideshow of the new inductees with photos they submitted to the google classroom.
