Bishop Andrew Gregory Grutka of Joliet, Illinois, was the first bishop of the Diocese of Gary in Indiana who served from 1956–1984. After serving for 28 years, he resigned as bishop but continued to serve the diocese under the new bishop. He died peacefully in his home in Valporaiso in 1993 at the age of 85. He was entombed in the east transept of the Holy Angels Cathedral, and he remains there today. He was the son of working-class, Slovak immigrants, and this played a huge role in his stances on social issues.
