The Master in Library and Information Science is a graduate program designed for librarians and information professionals in all types of libraries. The program focuses on research, library management, and innovations in information technology to develop librarians as library educator and professional information scientist. It provides opportunities to enhance competencies on the following: information and information centers management, document analysis, library organization, and communication and information literacy.
The program aims to prepare librarians to their new roles, capabilities and responsibilities as knowledge managers focusing more on the design, development and management of libraries and other information institutions as well as their collections and services. This will also enable graduate students to carefully develop new information services and technology that will further enhance the access of information; demonstrate wide knowledge of library, information science, knowledge management including information organization, effective communication, social, political and ethical issues.
The MLIS curriculum consists of 12 units of core courses, 6 units of innovation management courses, 21 units of specialization courses, 3 units of elective course, a comprehensive exam, and a 6-unit Thesis.
Graduates of the program are expected to be able to:
a. Demonstrate advance knowledge, ability and competence in applying pedagogical innovations in providing user-education programs and information literacy in the academic community.
b. Able to understand, develop, and sustain arguments about and critically evaluate current problems, principles and concepts in library and information science of which should be at the forefront of developments in the discipline. Manifest leadership on technology integration and innovation;
c. Exhibit comprehensive understanding of the methods of inquiry in his/her research or advance scholarship and how these methods are used to create or interpret knowledge about the subject field including evaluation of current research and methodologies related to the discipline.
d. · Creatively and systematically deal with complex issues within a field, make judgments or decisions in the absence of complete data, and clearly communicate one’s justification for such actions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
The target clientele of the program are students who graduated under the BLIS Curriculum or its equivalent who wish to pursue advanced graduate education in the field of Library and Information Science, especially those who need an MA degree in order to qualify and take the licensure examination for librarians. Non-LIS majors who want to take the Master’s program are required to take DIPLOMA course in Library and Information Science before being accepted to the Master’s program.
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution, with a General Point Average of 85%, 2.0, B or better.
